A good description of the nature of psychiatry and psychiatric disease. Helpfully positive about standard treatments, makes the point that they are much more effective than they seem in the trials because those most likely to benefit cannot be taken into the trials. Hence he is clearly in favour of ECT and also of CBT. Down on analysis as completely unproven. But his main point is that most of the support needed by those without severe illness can by given by friends in e.g. church, and that important support even of those with SMI can be offered by amateurs. Good outline of general psyche hygiene, useful for everybody but could have done with more on addiction.
In his early chapters he seemed to be trying to find modern psychiatric principles in the bible. I think this is a bit unreal, better to aim to show that psychiatry is not incompatible with biblical teaching. ( )
