THE ENGAGEMENT ASSIGNMENT While investigating a dangerous drug ring, Detective Chloe Brant witnesses a hostage situation...and gets pulled into a case that could make her career. But to bring down rival drug-dealing gangs, she has to pose as the fiancée of Detective Trent Henry--the man who broke her heart the last time they were undercover together. Trent's been undercover so long, he can't let anything blow this case...even his growing feelings for his temporary fiancée. But when Trent comes face-to-face with his past, a killer makes Chloe a target. And for the first time, the danger of his job is personal...because if Trent wants his pretend romance to become real, he and Chloe must stay alive.… (altro)
I had a hard time getting into the plot or caring about either of the two main characters (Chloe and Trent). That made it hard to rate this book as more than an average rating.
Chloe has trust issues stemming from something with her family that I don't recall as well as from promises made by others that weren't kept. Somehow, in Trent and his family, she finds the ability to trust again.
Trent's blamed himself for his sister's death--but feels it's worse when he can't blame himself. In response, he's tried to harden his heart against being attached to anyone--but Chloe may make him change his mind.
Chloe and Trent have worked together in the past--even pretending to be dating or engaged during those times. Chloe apparently began to have feelings for Trent during that time but he left her behind to take the next undercover assignment he was given. Now, Trent's undercover as a hockey coach and professor trying to track down the source of a designer drug--an assignment that takes him back to his teens and his involvement with a local gang.
There's an info. dump about his history just before the showdown that stops the momentum of the plot. ( )
Well, that ended up being better than I thought! Even though some parts did drive me crazy, (and then there was that huge backstory dump . . .) I did enjoy it.
Recommended for ages 16 for violence and romance. ( )

Thanks as always to my agent, Melissa Jeglinski, my editor, Emily Rodmell, and the rest of the Love Inspired team, who encourage authors like me and bring stories like these to life.

The crash of exploding glass echoed up through the empty halls of the Bobcaygeon Sports Center, shattering the early morning peace and drowning out the melody of Christmas carols.

But all he knew for sure, was that Chloe's hands were in his hair, her lips were kissing him back, his heart was filled with more joy than he'd ever imagined feeling, and he was going to love the irrepressible woman he held in his arms for the rest of his life.
