The first comprehensive study of its kind, this fully illustrated book establishes Paganism as a persistent force in European history with a profound influence on modern thinking. From the serpent goddesses of ancient Crete to modern nature-worship and the restoration of the indigenous religions of eastern Europe, this wide-ranging book offers a rewarding new perspective of European history. In this definitive study, Prudence Jones and Nigel Pennick draw together the fragmented sources of Europe's native religions and establish the coherence and continuity of the Pagan world vision. Exploring Paganism as it developed from the ancient world through the Celtic and Germanic periods, the authors finally appraise modern Paganism and its apparent causes as well as addressing feminist spirituality, the heritage movement, nature-worship and `deep' ecology This innovative and comprehensive history of European Paganism will provide a stimulating, reliable guide to this popular dimension of religious culture for the academic and the general reader alike.… (altro)

Comprehensive but dry. And it has an index.

Dropped and shelved upon reading page 4, the modernist pseudo-religion known as wicca is not a continuation of the ancient European faith and it is not "modern-day paganism". ( )

I LOVE this book. It functions as a 400 page knockout punch to the concept that folk religion is dead in Europe by going section by section through the pagan practices and their lasing impact on the entire continent. Other reviews say this book is too obviously pagan; they are correct. It is probably very obnoxious if you are not pagan. That's blindingly undeniable. ( )

Encyclopedic and sometimes turgid, A History of Pagan Europe nonetheless details some all but forgotten details of pre-Christian life throughout Europe. It also does a good job of describing the battles between Christianity and Paganism for control of the continent. The book simply lacks the sweep, however, of something like The Golden Bough, through which readers interested in the historical transformation of societies would much more profit. ( )

I'm always a little leery of historians with an obvious axe to grind, and the authors of this book - better known for a series of New Age and Wiccan publications - definitely qualify. I think they overcompensated for their bias by being as dry and academic as humanly possible, thus rendering their legitimately interesting subject matter into a painful and tedious slog. If you can get past these two rather large hurdles, you will find a wealth of rewarding historical detail here, and a surprising look at European history for those of us who accepted without question that paganism was pretty much finished with the conversion of Constantine. Sorry, that sentence got really long. ( )
