Stumbling upon this book in NetGalley, I knew I needed to read it. There's just something about stories that have characters who go through any type of experience that involves their own death that keeps me interested. Seeing as how science has still yet to grasp what happens during near death experiences and what truly happens after we pass, it's fun to see the different types of scenarios writers can come up with for their stories. With that said, this story definitely did not disappoint. With Nichole as our main, bitchy character who I'd normally, in real life, want to punch in the bitchy face, we're introduced to her bitchy friends and the immediately lovable Dale. Nichole is your typical sixteen-year-old, cold-hearted person who has the eye-rolling love for "bad boys." While she's fussing over the fact that she's sixteen and needs to have fun... Originally titled Betwixt, The Space Between Heartbeats is my favorite type of paranormal/YA read. If I Stay by Gayle Forman and Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver are two books similar to this one. I enjoy the moment the characters find their true selves, knowing that their friends aren't right for them, and that their decisions have not been in their own best interest. Melissa Pearl did an excellent job of getting right to the plot and every moment after reveals something new. I liked that we learn the background story to why Nicole is how she is over time and see her moment of clarity very clearly. While the story about friends being fake is common, the between life moments and big reveal surprised me.
The relationship between Dale and Nicole hovers between realistic and too fast. While she's a ghost, Dale admits his feelings slowly to her and Nicole recognizes how attractive he is and what a good person he is. However, their move from flirting as ghost and human to dating in human form is quick. The secondary characters of Nicole's friends are very forced and cliche.
Overall, The Space Between Heartbeats is a fast-paced, emotional read. It's about second chances and discovering who you really are and want to be. I read this over a period of two hours and I highly recommend it to others. ( )
