From the basic concept of the Teddy Bear Club, a group of gay single dads meeting at a café once a week, to the characters and their quirks, this novel had me charmed from page one. There isn’t any huge danger-and-threats drama, but instead, this story is full of the little disasters and everyday chaos any parent will be able to relate to. And amidst all of that, there are two men who have chosen to stick with their kids no matter what, only to discover that there is a kindred soul for even the most diaper and seemingly-in-constant-need-of-a-bottle challenged guy. Super cute! Aiden has two daughters, one still a baby, both his sister’s kids now that she is institutionalized for being a danger to them and herself. Aiden copes pretty well, but he misses adult company and is grateful to have found it, at least once a week, in the Roasty Bean – a café that belongs to a friend of his. By the way, all those lattes and various muffins had my mouth watering! Aiden doesn’t expect romance in his life, at least not right now, but when he meets Devon, Aiden begins to reconsider. Devon has only just begun a totally unexpected journey into fatherhood. His sixteen-year-old sister left her son with him and has not returned to claim the baby, and as overwhelmed as Devon is most days, he loves the tiny boy and wants to make things permanent. Going it alone is tough, and finding friends at the café group’s meeting is a bonus – but Devon never expected to find more than that. So when things heat up between him and Aiden he is pleasantly surprised. But as challenging as dealing with three kids is, there’s more in store for Devon and Aiden. Devon’s bible-thumping mother, who disowned him when he came out at the age of sixteen, suddenly decides she wants the baby since she can’t leave it with a “deviant” like Devon. Between Devon, Aiden, and a lawyer friend from the Teddy Bear Club, they decide to fight back with everything they have. If you like romances between single parents, if you think the daily challenges of parenthood make good common ground from which to develop something longer-lasting, and if you’re looking for an adorable read with super cute kids, dads desperately looking for five minutes of grown-up time, and a touch of suspense that threatens it all, then you will probably like this novel. The Teddy Bear Club. Two lonely men. One perfect family. Aiden Lake adopted his institutionalized sister's two daughters, and he's a good dad. He works nights on websites and gets in his adult time twice a week at the Roasty Bean, where he meets with other single gay parents. Devon Smithson wants to be a good dad now that his sixteen-year-old sister asked him to babysit her newborn three months ago. But he's overwhelmed with the colicky baby. An invitation to the daddy-and-kid gatherings at the cafe is a godsend. The pot is sweetened when his friendship with Aiden develops into more-maybe even something that can last. But the mother who kicked Dev out for being gay wants to get her claws into the baby, and she doesn't care if she tears Dev, Aiden, and everything they're building apart in the process. This is a cute enough story, though it's certainly a very predictable one. I found myself engaged enough, liking both of the main characters and interested in seeing where their story went. It's a well-written, easy read, and I'd say it's certainly worth a gander--especially if you like romances involving parenting/family responsibilities. ( )
