This is a pretty good read, plenty of action and adventure and beefy men punching limbs off each other. The Carcharodons are an interesting addition to the lore, with plenty of future plot hooks dropped into the story. They're a bit too Pacific Islander-in-Space, the flavouring is slightly overdone and comes across more as sort of hammy-tiki theme. On the other hand, the Night Lords are very well done. Its a brave man who takes on Night Lords after Dembski-Bowden's masterpiece. They're glorious baddies, motivated by murder and bitterness and riven by infighting and backstabbing. What it lacks is any depth apart from the depths that the Carcharodons keep talking about coming from. This is meat and potatoes stuff, but shows promise and its good enough to read the next one in the series. ( )
