(PG) ( ) DNF: I stopped reading at 9% in, because I'm not getting what I need from the writing level or the characters. Doesn't mean it won't work for you; there's promise for the author as she hones her craft. But I can write iffy stories. I'd rather read well-done ones. Two stars for a heroine I actually like (so rare) and for not-terrible writing, which, trust me, that's valuable. So why did I quit? For me it needed either more humor, or any intensity. Both would be ideal. We're told she's a geek dedicated to career and thus not very experienced, but I didn't *feel* that sweaty-palms, icky tummy terror. There's no conflict, no stakes - and I know why. I read the blurb; those come later, and that means the structure of the story's wrong. I mean, I dislike flashbacks, but short ones in a moment of realization are justified. This reader was intrigued, but not hooked. Enjoyable but not the cat's pajamas. I will likely continue the series but not right away. The Random Thoughts: Challenges: A to Z Reading Challenge 2022 - R Goodreads Book Bingo 2022 - B3 - A debut novel I really wanted to love this one, but it fell short of my expectations. While I felt that the author got the "geeky" part right, the romance was unconvincing and I found I just wanted Melody to spend more time with her new girlfriends. The only funny parts were with those friends, after all. CW for an ex-boyfriend who committed suicide and appears to be a prop. That part really bothered me and could have been removed without damaging the plot. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
