Short, wholesome but not too preachy, and hopeful. A nice antidote for our times. ( ) Cute, in Alger's style. It's actually a little bit different from most - neither the boy nor the girl are making their way on their own, they're supported by their family(ies). The motivations are ridiculous - eight years? and giving her to a family and supporting them with money? - but if you can swallow that to start with, the rest fits and is fun. And a very strong, loving family (ah, that's what Aunt Rachel was for - to keep them from drowning in honey!) making an important part of the story. Then Ida and Jack on their (separate) own; some coincidences, of course, but in fact the clue that first triggers Jack is very reasonable (of course she'd accept money, even if it put Ida's face out there). Enjoyable, probably not worth rereading, at least not any time soon. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
It was a cold day. There was no snow on the ground, but it was frozen into stiff ridges, making it uncom-fortable to walk upon. The sun had been out all day, but there was little heat or comfort in its bright, but frosty beams. The winter is a hard season for the poor. It multiplies their necessities, while, in general, it limits their means and opportunities of earning. The winter of 1836-37 was far from being an exception to this rule. It was worse than usual, on account of the general stagnation of business. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
