A compelling, definitive account of how and why bin Laden's ideology keeps rising from the dead. When Osama bin Laden was killed by a U.S. Navy SEAL, many prophesied al-Qaeda's imminent demise. In reality the opposite has occurred. Why? Watching the Arab Spring from his Pakistani safe house, bin Laden had seen an historic opportunity: "The next stage will be the return of the caliphate." In the six years since bin Laden's death, al-Qaeda's affiliates metastasized, and the Islamic State, its most brutal spinoff, proclaimed itself the reborn caliphate bin Laden had foreseen. Anatomy of Terror is told through the stories of the flagbearers of today's Islamic radicalism, including a Jordanian drug dealer, an air force colonel who served Saddam Hussein, a reclusive Iraqi bookworm, and one of bin Laden's own sons. Ali Soufan, a top counterterrorism operative, lays bare the psychology and inner workings of al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, and their spawn and shows how the propagation of terrorism can be stopped.… (altro)

Áhugaverð umfjöllun um islömsku hryðjuverkasamtökin al-Qaeda og afkvæmi þeirra sem stundum hafa starfað náið með þeim en einnig í beinni andstöðu. Höfundurinn sem starfaði um tíma hjá FBI við hryðjuverkabaráttu þekkir vel til og segir sögu hryðjuverkasamtakanna í gegnum helstu forystumenn þeirra. ( )

I think the main points he's trying to make would have been better served by a focus on just a few people. Dry and resembling a textbook at times, I had a hard time keeping track of all the different personalities involved - especially given my ignorance of Middle Eastern names. Nevertheless, the book is a scholarly treatment of a very complicated situation that grips the world regionally, but also internationally. The best parts of the book detail the personal lives of the jihadists and Soufan does a good job of defining the differences between the various sects, how they are splintered and often at odds with each other. Timely, though perhaps a bit outdated today, the book is a vital addition to books like Wright's _The Looming Tower_ and Ackerman's _Reign of Terror_. The fact that Soufan presents us with some good advice on how to deal with terrorists, makes the book worthwhile. ( )

Sometimes when I read about how terrifying our government agencies are and how hypocritical and evil our foreign policy is I forget what type of lunatic scum they're up against. This book is obviously biased but you can't really argue with the facts it lays out and the internal communication between leaders shows their ideology as it's understood by them. I didn't really know much about Islamic terrorism beyond reading the news so this was fairly informative and to be honest I'm not really keen to learn more. I don't care what they think, they have nothing of value. It's like trying to learn something from a tribe performing human sacrifice. Why would you want to? ( )
