I really liked the character of Declan - he's rough around the edges but there is something really good about him at the same time. The novel focuses in on the moment when things in Declan's life go through a watershed change - fractured family relationships start to come together. I didn't like the ending only because I didn't want things left "in the air" but all in all a lovely book. The audience is YA but there is a fair amount of cursing ... which is common among the demographic but nevertheless, something to be aware of. I can definitely see people enjoying it; I know I would have adored this if I were still 11-12 years old. That being due to the narrative voice and the completely stereotypical characters. It just felt like someone in their 30s trying to write teenagers. Bad boy loves heavy rock (loved the references though) and smokes pot and comes from a damaged home life. Little Miss Perfect gets good grades and has a loving and rich family, but there's a twist! She loves to hip hop dance. Woah! I thought that the characters just lacked something. And the relationship between the two, it was completely underdeveloped. I know I just complained about the characters feeling unrealistic, but I must say that the dialogue between Declan and his friends is pretty spot on. Overall, it's a...fun? read. The content isn't fun, but it's a good book if you're just looking for something quick and easy to read. I'd give it a 2.5, if someone were to ask how I'd like it, I'd absolutely say "It was okay, I enjoyed it." It was good, just not my personal style. This book follows Declan O'Reilly and his family has he navigates personal growth, estranged family relationships, socio-economic/class collisions, etc. A story of growing up. Declan's father left his mom and older brother and sister five years ago. The split has had dramatic repercussions on the family's fortunes, prospects, interactions with each other, and mental well-being. Declan works hard to keep things together in light of his brother's descent into anger. When school administration shows Declan that he might have academic prospects, his life begins to improve. Lots of turns and plot twists, all draped in a realistic voice with raw, palpable emotion, make this a compelling read. You feel attachment to each character and even those which start off unsympathetic are developed in such a way that the reader can come to some understanding concerning their emotions. Very strong book that brings a strong emotion impact while making it real and readable. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Subject to Change follows Declan, a sophomore who is lost and struggling with a rough family life. He meets a tutor, who he calls Little Miss Perfect, and they (of course) develop a relationship and see past each other's flaws.
The characters weren't overly perfect, which was refreshing. I enjoyed reading Declan's struggles and inner thoughts. However, the characters overall were very stereotypical- boy with a rough home life who smokes and fails at school, girl with the "perfect" life, etc. Also, the dialogue was forced, like someone was trying to write about teens and didn't understand how to. As a teenager myself, we do not talk or act like some of the characters in the book. Finally, the plot was all over the place - there was conflict with the family, relationship with the tutor, the crime, etc. It was way too much for one book. If there was a focus on fewer conflicts, the plot would've been better developed.
Overall, this was an quick and entertaining read. This book isn't very unique, but it will keep you entertained. ( )
