I stayed up last night to read Wildfire by Anne Stuart because I wanted to see what happened next. I found this to be a real page-turner, full of unexpected surprises. I've read some of the author's Regency books, but this was the first contemporary of hers I read and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Sophie is a prisoner on her husband's private island. An ex-operative for the Committee, she had made the mistake of falling in love with her target and marrying him. Now confined to a wheelchair, Sophie is subject to his abuse and mind games all the while plotting her escape. Meanwhile, the Committee (the organization that originally sent Sophie to kill Archer has now sent another undercover agent, Malcolm, to finish the job. Mal and Sophie become reluctant allies against Archer while both fight the instant connection between the them. I liked very much the connection between Sophie and Mal though I did wonder at Sophie's propensity for the quick attraction that occurred first with Archer, then Mal. Mal was able to explain both Sophie's failure to complete her mission and this attraction in a way that made sense to me. I did like that I was unable to determine some of the twists and turns; that's what kept me up reading. It was a quick read and I thank Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

The characters in Wild Fire are flawed in ways that makes them tough to like. Sophie has played the victim for so long that now she is only interested in revenge. Malcolm is a burned out agent who just wants to complete this one final mission and doesn't really care if Sophie gets away or not. Their negativity and unwillingness to work together makes it difficult to enjoy their story. Overall, a well written story, but not a very enjoyable read. ( )
