I found it hard to identify with the central character, but the others are strongly drawn, especially her invalid mother. Stark, spare style and plot - makes me say this book is a poem. It will stand at least a couple of re-reads to get at the many layers, reflections, of meaning, which is why i give it five stars (having read it only once so far, i'd give it four but the anticipation of what i'll get out of it next time adds the other). (For example, i'd say Grantleigh is the Serpent.) Some sharp humour; some shocks. 'Stillest' is appropriate. ( )
