There was a excerpt in the back of Burn Baby Burn, the first chapter of Karma...and I couldn't resist reading the whole story. This is Witch and Wolf world (as I kind of already knew, from the short stories in Water Witch), but for a large chunk of the story Karma doesn't know anything about it; we get to see what Normals see about Fenerec (not much). Karma has serious trust issues...reasonable and well-deserved ones, at that. Jake does a lot to erase them, at least where he's concerned...and then screws up mightily. And then there's the reveal - not just of Fenerecs, but of what Karma can do (some of what she can do). Her world is quite thoroughly upended. The book stops in a reasonable place - there's a lot more to happen, clearly, but they've reached a point of stability for the moment. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Karma Johnson has spent her entire adult life working to become a member of FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team. She's earned her transfer to CARD, but when she's caught up in the kidnapping of an infant from a festival, she learns what it's like to be the victim. Pretending she's a teen keeps her alive while trying to get herself and the baby to safety. But the kidnapping only scratches at the surface of a far more nefarious scheme, one that will test Karma's skills, her patience, her sanity, and her beliefs. Just finished this first book of a two-parter and I am still on a high. Thankfully I waited until book two was out before I started so I can start that straight away.
There are some great characters - Karma in particular. She is small and slight; fiercely independent and capable, but with some endearing frailties. At the beginning of the book she is about to start her dream assignment at the FBI, that of resolving child abductions, when her life is disrupted through utter mischance.
I was surprised at first by the lack of paranormal elements. Just wait … it’s on its way.
The plot is not simple, and keeps surprising you all the way through. The author is a master at the teasing reveal. I have yet to be disappointed in any of her work. She is one of the few that I will automatically order pre-release. ( )
