This book reminded me a lot of old Signet and Zebra Regency trads. The characters were refreshing, just ordinary people, and you could see how they would fall in love (and the secondary characters were enjoyable without screaming Sequel Bait all the time). But there was almost no sense of place. The story was set in 1879, but apart from some references to train travel and Gilbert & Sullivan, it could have been a Regency. There were lots of ducal families who somehow did not all know of each other, and no industrial types. Still, a pleasant read, and for me and Historical Romance, that's saying something. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Meeting her would change everything...Responsible, level-headed, and invariably good-humored, Hugo Lowell, Viscount Saxby, has his plans for Christmas--and his future--all mapped out. Until a surprise invitation lands him at the country estate of Harold Lyons, the rich and powerful Duke of Whitborough.Drawn into his host's charming, often contentious family circle, Hugo finds himself matching wits and words with the Duke's eldest daughter, Lady Madeline. Striking, clever, and as sharp-tongued as she is sharp-witted, Madeline is the polar opposite of the placid, proper beauty Hugo intends to marry. So why can't he get her out of his mind? And how is it that she can persuade him to attempt things he's never tried before? As Advent yields to Christmas, Hugo's future becomes far less predictable...and infinitely more exciting. Lady Madeline, eldest daughter of Harold Lyons, the Duke of Whitborough, has until now not been interested in any suitors, that is until she meets at Hugo Lowell, Viscount Saxby at her family's house party.
Hugo has been contemplating marriage and has attended the house party at the behest of his sister to keep an eye on their younger brother. He is enroute to spend Christmas with a family whose daughter seems to be a promising bride.
That was before he met Madeline.
This pleasing novella bodes well for the series.
