I really enjoyed this book! This book really showcased that we all come from somewhere and that at one time we were all immigrants coming to a new world. It really sends a message to kids that we are all more alike than we think. I would recommend this book for grades 1-3. ( )

This super cute, and fun book was so much fun to read! It focuses on who we are and where we came from. The book starts out with the story of the teachers great-grandmother, she immigrated from another country and all she was allowed to bring was a suitcase with her favorite belongings. The teacher asks the students what they would take with them if they only had one suitcase. ( )

A book that discusses identity and how how our past shapes who we are. Sets up well for a writing assignment about what students would put in their suitcase.

Jamie Lee Curtis’ This Is Me is a fun story that underscores important questions that people of all ages can ask themselves. The story uses interactive features and pop outs along with the use of effective language techniques like questions and statements that appeal to the curious nature of the reader.
This is Me’s primary focus is in asking what is important to the reader. If they could only pack one suitcase full of everything they could keep, what would be in it? The questions peak curiosity and thinking in the reading, causing more interest in the book by the reader. The story’s carefree tone while discussing critical and deep concepts makes the reading light yet full of important questions to ask a class or yourself.
The interactive portions of this book also keep the story very light. The pop up suitcase makes the story a fun read that would keep children interested. The big idea of this text is that there are important to everyone; and whether they are material or immaterial, and should be respected, absorbed, and respected by others. ( )

I would highly recommend this book for three reasons. First, this book has a great message. "This is Me" teaches children that material possessions are not the defining characteristics that create an individual. The book states, "For who you all are isn't just what you've got, but part what you learn, part what you're taught. Who you become starts with your past, family histories and stories that last." Next, I truly enjoyed the illustrations. The illustrations are done in a watercolor style and the pictures are painted in great detail. Lastly, this book pushes readers to think about the things that hold value in their lives. The book begins by asking the reader to think about the things that matter most to them. This progresses to telling the reader that their individuality is about much more than their possessions. I love this message because many children will place value on their lives based on what they have and not who they are or where they came from. ( )
