Five people-- former housemates at Penn who split up after the death of the sixth, Bea-- come together and must confront their pasts, on what would have been Bea's fortieth birthday. Twenty years ago six Penn students shared a house, naively certain that their friendships would endure. Then the death of their ringleader Bea splintered the group for good. Now, mostly estranged from one another, they gather at that same house on the eve of what would have been Bea's fortieth birthday. Along with the friends come old grudges, unrequited feelings, and buried secrets. Reunited in the place where so many dreams began, and bolstered by the hope of healing, each of them is forced to confront the past.… (altro)

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.

I've read several of Allison Winn Scotch novels and have enjoyed them all. In Twenty Years takes us inside the dynamics of six college students and their diverse, six-star friendship (two male, four female.)

Bea, one of the six points of the star, passed away years ago and left one request-- that her five friends gather at their old college rental home over the 4th of July on what would have been Bea's 40th birthday... and open letter's they'd written back in college to their "older self." Oh boy, can't we all relate to the realization that our life rarely turns out how we imagined at twenty!

There are many "successful" stories in their group, but we soon realize they come with a price. As their get-together unfolds it is filled with regrets, lies, wishes, and a lot of soul-searching. All with a message (to me anyway) that few understand us as well as our old friends. A great read!

In Twenty Years/Allison Winn Scotch Twenty years ago, six Penn students shared a house, naively certain that their friendships would endure—until the death of their ringleader and dear friend Bea splintered the group for good. Now, mostly estranged from one another, the remaining five reluctantly gather at that same house on the eve of what would have been Bea’s fortieth birthday. But along with the return of the friends come old grudges, unrequited feelings, and buried secrets. Catherine, the CEO of a domestic empire, and Owen, a stay-at-home dad, were picture-perfect college sweethearts—but now teeter on the brink of disaster. Lindy, a well-known musician, is pushing middle age in an industry that’s all about youth and slowly self-destructing as she grapples with her own identity. Behind his smile, handsome plastic surgeon Colin harbors the heartbreaking truth about his own history with Bea. And Annie carefully curates her life on Instagram and Facebook, keeping up appearances so she doesn’t have to face the truth about her own empty reality.Reunited in the place where so many dreams began, and bolstered by the hope of healing, each of them is forced to confront the past.
The five characters of this book had to confront the disparity between reality and their expectations and aspirations for life. The results, of course, were not what they imagined.

I found this book fascinating in that I'm intrigued by the way people's hopes and dreams can turn into a 9-5 office job and paying the bills--or simply surviving. These five have managed to make a slightly convoluted mix of the two--two in particular are living lives they both probably would have dreamed of. Yet it seems none are particularly happy.

Bea is that whimsical character that appears in many books and is never particularly insightful but is always heartbreakingly lovable. The circumstances of her death are up in the air and it seems that the only thing that everyone knows with confidence is how much they miss her.

Maybe I'm a little bit too young for this book, but I found it hard to connect with its characters. Lindy was probably my favourite, though the one I related the least to. The way she talked about going from being a famous songwriter to having someone else writing her hits for her was a poignant look at the music industry, and she and Catherine's perceptions of their own ideas and success were most touching to me.

Though the premise was cool, I wasn't terribly sold by the plot of this book. At the end, I felt like Annie was the only one who might have really changed or who had possibilities for the future. I wasn't quite sure where the end goal was, and the telling of the tale to take us there wasn't quite enough for me to adore this.

This is by no means a bad story and the author has tied a lot together, but it didn't enthuse me much.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

20 years ago they were the 6 pointed star, 6 best friends sharing a house, and their hopes and dreams for the future. When Bea passed away, the remaining 5 drifted apart. Now reunited for the first time in more than a decade they must come to grips with the fact that life is what you make it and perhaps come to grips with the fact that if you get the things you think you wanted in your 20s it may not the perfect reality you envisioned.
4 out of 5 stars from me for this engaging summer read.
I received a complimentary copy for review. ( )

This is about a click of college kids that moved on and met back up in 20 years after a member of their group died. Everyone has so many first world problems. Their marriage isn't happy, having problems at work, other relationships aren't going right. It all comes down to communication. No one is really listening or speaking up to try to resolve the problems. Most are doing well with money. Some are famous even. It was worth my time, but it didn't blow me away. ( )

Enjoyed this on Kindle. Although it didn't wow me, it was fun entertainment on the plane and by the pool. It's a character-driven story about college friends who reunite to open a time capsule when they're 40. The only member of their tight-knit group who couldn't be there, arranged the reunion before she died, years earlier. Maybe it was due to my own age, but I felt like the dialogue sounded more like college students than 40-year-olds, and that got a bit old in the middle, for me. But overall I appreciated some inspired quotes about marriage and growth in life and relationships, and I especially liked the conclusions various personalities arrived at in the end. ( )
