A very quick read. Story of a young girl, Alexa, trying to find herself. Characters (Alexa, Gavin, Gran, etc) are overall enjoyable but need some development and additional complexity. Definitely good for Teen/YA readers.

I received a free digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. ( )

This novel targets a teen audience, but it can certainly be enjoyed by adults as I had a hard time putting it down! I loved how the characters, especially Alexa, showed so much growth. Her journey between the starlight was one of my favourite sections of the book. I would gladly read more from this author! ( )

From page 2 of this book, I struggled to keep reading. It was akin to reading the script of an old 90210 episode. The main characters have no depth, even though hints of revealing more of their character are there, nothing ever really comes of it. The details of the mundane abound, dragging the movement of the story line. I believe this could be a really great book - but the essay that supposedly turns her world around doesn't even make a dent in her daily life. Perhaps if there was enough to keep me reading, I'd eventually read the essay. But, instead I'm dragged through journal entries of the protagonist that remind me of junior high rants.

If you go into this book with the understanding it is a YA novel, you will love it! Elaine Pinter is a really great writer and she kept me interested in this story the whole time I was reading. She made me laugh, she made me almost cry and reading this brought back memories of high school. ( )

Alexa is a sweet and funny albeit very clumsy and a little bit naïve girl who does not really believe in car maintenance. So when she hears her car making a noise she simple cranks up the volume of her radio and sings along. When Alexa’s car finally breaks down in the middle of an intersection there is Gavin, a boy from school, who comes to her rescue and pushes it to an empty parking lot. She never really paid him a lot of attention at school but now she immediately does take in his crooked smile and kind eyes. After she returns home she wonders why she never even thought about calling her boyfriend. This incident and the senior paper assignment she has to make with her reflections about the person she was over the last 4 years make her think about her life and that nagging feeling she has that she’s missing something. It makes her want to become a new Alexa. I really liked this forceful new Alexa who takes things into her own hands. She commits herself to returning the favour and helping Gavin so that he can graduate. Her life is really on the right path, the only glitch is that she wants to express her words of love to the person who rejects love. Sometimes a person then really has to be put on the spot. There comes a moment that really defines the rest of the story and it becomes clear that you just have to stay on your true path in life, whatever that is. It’s an important lesson to be learned that it might be difficult and hard but the curveballs thrown at you will lead you in the right direction.
I really liked the characters of Alexa and Gavin and Gavin’s family, especially Gran. The dynamics worked well but I loved the first part of the book better than the last part. What was happening was all a bit hard to comprehend and see before my eyes. It was also a bit repetitive and I did not really feel as much emotion for what I wanted to happen finally than I would have liked. I thought I would be rooting for one side or another but I was stuck in the middle also. I did like the ending though, it was fitting and I would not have wanted it any other way.
I was given a free copy in exchange for my honest review. ( )
