Changing Focus is the story of two newspaper staffers. Jorge, the new editor, and Mac, a senior photographer. This is told in third person from both Jorge and Mac’s povs.



I’ve read numerous books by this author and I usually like them because the author has unique characters and plots. However, this book didn’t work for me. The characters grated on my nerves, especially Mac, and I couldn’t identify with them. They had opposite personalities and the only thing they had in common was they wanted to get in each other’s pants.

Jorge must have been desperate to find a boyfriend, because Mac treated Jorge like crap. Mac didn’t respect Jorge’s boundaries and was an arrogant jerk. There was no reason Jorge should be attracted to Mac, no matter how many times the author repeated that Jorge thought Mac was hot. Would you trust a man who did all this to you?

1) Gossiped and talked down about you to other employees.
2) Insists on calling you by the wrong name because he knows it upsets you.
3) Thinks that he (Mac) is the person to teach you a lesson for whatever reason, even though he knows you have to trust him for his help. But then sets you up to fail and almost gets you killed.
4) Was going to apologize but never really does.
5) Gets drunk, molests you by kissing you, and grabbing your junk in public.
6) Again is going to apologize but never does.
7) Outs you to your boss because he was jealous, he thought you were on a date with someone else.
8) Finally apologizes, but only because he hopes he still has a chance to get into your pants.

Mac is more than a jerk, but I won’t print that here. How could Jorge ever trust Mac? Jorge is an idiot. The author created two annoying characters who have nothing in common except sex. I suppose there are real life people who settle for jerks because they don’t think highly enough of themselves. In that way, this aggravating pair deserve each other.

I thought Changing Focus would be an entertaining read by an author I can usually count on to write good stories. Unfortunately, all I ended up was annoyed, unable to relate to the characters, and found Mac to be one of the most unpleasant characters I have ever read in MM romance. This book gets only 2 Stars from me.
