I really loved this one and my son also loved this book. We're both dog lovers! ( )

The book “Land Shark” by Beth Ferry and illustrated by Ben Mantle was amazing. If I had to point to my two favorite things about this book it would be the language used and the illustrations. The book is about a young boy named Bobby who wants nothing else but a shark for his birthday. A real shark too, not like a small freshwater shark. Unfortunately, he gets the worst birthday present ever – a puppy. Bobby is so disappointed in this puppy and just wants his parents to get rid of him. Bobby swears that a shark person can never become a dog person.
The language in this book is so dynamic. There are certain words that the author draws your attention to, by capitalizing them and making them larger than the rest. The words are dramatic and flow together nicely. For instance, on the first page “A frightful, bite-ful, delightful plan.” This phrase is used throughout the book. The language that is used throughout the book draws the readers in and really captivates your attention.
The illustrations in this book are amazing. They are so detailed and so exciting. One of my favorite illustrations is the one that is straight from Jaws and has the sleeping puppy with the shark behind it with his mouth wide open. The puppy destroys the house and chews everything and the illustrations really show that. There’s a stuffed panda with his head ripped off, a baseball bat chewed up, the couch is clawed up and the trash cans are tipped over.
This book is a really good picture book. The big idea of this book is that sometimes what you do not want can be what you need. Bobby so badly wants a shark but a shark is not a feasible pet. Bobby ends up coming around the dog and it turns out that a dog is a good pet for Bobby. ( )

I liked this book because it turned a disappointment into something good. In the book, Bobby wants a pet shark for his birthday. He drops hints all year long, including making a banner that says "Pets make the very best, most coolest birthday presents ever!" When Bobby's birthday finally comes, his family takes him to the garage where he thinks there will be a shark, but instead there is a puppy. Bobby is not thrilled and is very upset. The puppy chews a lot of the family's belongings and barks all hours of the day and night. Bobby wants nothing to do with the puppy and is happy that his family is frustrated that with her in hopes that they'll get rid of her. One night the puppy got into the neighbor's trash and Bobby has to give her a bath. After the puppy's bath, she takes a big bite out of Bobby's favorite shark stuffed animal. His family thinks that Bobby will be upset with the puppy, but instead that is the moment that makes them bond because the mark the puppy made looks like a shark bite. From then on the puppy and Bobby were best friends. The main idea of this story is to gives things (living or nonliving) a chance because you never know if you'll wind up liking them or not. The character of Bobby was very believable in this book because when children think they won't like something they won't even give it a chance like Bobby originally did with the puppy. I also liked the illustrations in the book. When the book shows the garage door opening, it looks like there is a shark, but then you find out it was just the shadows of a surfboard and lamp. There were a lot of little details such as that which really added to the book. ( )

I loved this book! I thought Land Shark was so adorable and it was very interesting too. One reason why I liked this book was because of the layout of the font. There were lists and small words and big words. Each page was something different and the pages were not too wordy either – I was engaged throughout the entire book. The illustrations were another reason why I absolutely loved this book. They had such detail and description and they could tell the story without any words. As the young boy longed for a pet shark, he received a puppy for his birthday. He was extremely upset. As the family watched the puppy bite through toys, stuffed animals, and furniture, the little boy still wanted a pet shark. Until one day when the puppy bit through his stuffed animal with his amazing teeth. The little boy was so surprised and he turned into a puppy lover. Each page had colors and shapes and accurate depictions of the story line and plot. The entire book was written and illustrated in great detail. ( )
