In the late 1850's, thousands of poverty-stricken Scandinavians were lured to America by missionaries of the Latter-day Saints with promises of great prosperity. Ingrid Thirkelsen's marriage to Brother Rasmussen is as surprising to her as the hope he stirs within. Assigned to the Martin Party of immigrants, she sets out after him, encountering for the first time the horrors of polygamy, blood atonement and blind obedience to cult leaders. As she makes the handcart trek across the Plains and Rocky Mountains, a locket she has promised to deliver in Zion and her Ma's Bible are the only items that give her comfort and the strength to endure the unendurable. * * * * * For well over a century, leaders of the LDS (Mormon) Church have ignored or sanitized the brutal atrocities of their early "prophets." Today, church officials have begun to acknowledge some of the evil events that shaped their history. However, such revelations are given a flattering spin that continues to paint their prophets and early leaders with a broad brush of holiness and virtue despite incontrovertible evidence to the contrary. Ingrid's story reflects the unvarnished historical events from those who witnessed them. Jeremiah 13:23b (Message Bible) .....Can a leopard get rid of its spots? So what are the odds on your doing good, you who are so long practiced in evil?… (altro)

Disclaimer: I received this book free from the publisher in return for an honest review

This author got my hackles up early. Very, very anti-Mormon, with the opinion being stated whether it really fit with that portion of the story or not. The author would have been served better by developing her character more and adding more conflict in her heart and mind, so the reader sympathizes with the protagonist. The writing was also choppy, so the story didn't flow well. The author should have cut out a good bit of detail, and maybe expanded some sections better. I had to go look up what really happened with that pilgrimage to get a real sense of this piece of history. ( )

An interesting story of a young Danish woman being "married" to a Mormon and on her own being told to make her way to Deseret. On her trip across the ocean and across the continent she hears more and more disturbing stories about the religious group that she is going to join. She begins to have doubts about the whole situation when she discovers that the young girl she is hoping to give a locket to is also married to her husband. With the help of strangers she is able to slip away from the caravan headed to Deseret. Now she is alone in a new and strange land and finds aid and comfort from various people.

Very interesting read. ( )

A fascinating glimpse into life (if it can be called that) on The Mormon Trail in the middle of the 19th Century. A vulnerable young orphan girl sets out from Copenhagen to join the LDS pilgrims heading to Salt Lake City. Her courage and determination to survive and fulfil her promises grows with each trial on the journey. And what desperation she experienced! Well research, well written, informative, and just an all-round great read. I'll certainly be on the lookout for more books in this series as they come available. Thanks to the publisher for the chance to read this - they sent me a free copy as part of a give-away from LibraryThing in exchange for a fair review - I doubt I would have come across this title/series otherwise, and I'm glad I have.

Disclaimer: I received a free e-book edition of this book from the Early Reviewers program, but that does not affect my review.

This book was a quick and pretty engaging read. I grew up in a pretty heavily LDS neighborhood and although I disagree strongly with their theology, I've always admired the Mormon people. This book exposed me to a side of the church that had only been hinted at before. Compared to Wallace Stegner's books on the Mormons, Adell Harvey paints a much more sinister picture of the church. It's been years since I read Stegner and now I'd like to revisit his writing for comparison.

Having said that, The Locket pretty much turns into a romance about halfway through. We only learn about the Mormon society in Salt Lake City through second-hand stories and pronouncements from the church prophets. It was a nice story but I would have liked more history and less romance. ( )

A sad but wonderful story. Ingrid takes on more issues than most people can ever think possible. After she was brought to America by the Mormons to live in The Promised land she quickly became disillusioned with the Faith. Especially after she learned her newly wed husband was already married with a child on the way. No matter how much the Followers tried to convince her that this was God's way, she wanted no part of it.She faces many challenges but through her Christian faith and her strength she is able to overcome these obstacles. I often found the story breaking my heart but through Ingrid's faith and determination, I knew she would win. A great story that I highly recommend, ( )
