In my opinion, The Subway Mouse is a good book. I liked the book because the main character, Nib, is well developed into an adventurous and curious subway mouse. He starts collected things that other people think is trash, and then realizes that he wants to go on an adventure that everyone else is scared to. There is also some suspense and conflict when Nib and his new friend Lola get chased through the tunnel by a gang, which adds some interest to the book. Finally, the illustrations are very interesting and almost look like pictures made from clay. Overall, the book provided adventure with a likable main character and intriguing illustrations. ( )

47 months - Great illustrations all done in plasticine relief... and a really good story too. We all enjoyed this one... oh Canadian author too. :) ( )

The story is pretty cute--adventurous little mouse and nice claymation illustrations. ( )

This was a sweet story of a mouse's adventure. Nib has heard the story of the wonderful tunnel's end. He longs for his own space in the crowded subway tunnel. One day he has had enough of the crowded conditions and sets off for the tunnel's end. He encounters a number of scary hazards along the way, in addition to finding a friend named Lola to join his endeavor. Nib and Lola find the wonderful open outdoor world at the end of the tunnel and live happily ever after. The illustrations were unique and added to the tale. ( )

Reid, Barbara. The subway mouse. (2005). New York: Scholastic Press.

This picture book is the story of Nib, a mouse who lives in a mouse community deep in the subway. He is on an adventure and is at first happy with the treasures he has collected from the subway platform. He tires of his home though, and sets out for the mythic Tunnel’s End. It is a long journey and another mouse, Lola, joins him. They finally reach Tunnel’s End – outside. It is more dangerous than their former homes, but it is more beautiful too. Nib and Lola and their children live happily in their new home.

Very young and older children will be charmed by the story and fascinated by the illustrations, which make the places and events in the story come alive. These illustrations are made with placticine shapes which are pressed onto illustration board. Acrylic pain and found objects add to the 3-dimensional look. The colors are browns, grays and oranges (except for Nib’s colorful treasures) inside the tunnels, and more bright colors are added when Nib goes outside. The textures look so real you think you can touch and feel Nib’s fur. ( )
