Welcome to SmartMart, where crime pays minimum wage... Busted. Alexis Dubois just got caught shoplifting a cheap tube of lipstick at the local SmartMart. She doesn't know what's worse--disappointing her overbearing beauty-pageant-obsessed mother for the zillionth time...or her punishment. Because Lex is forced to spend her summer working at the store, where the only things stranger than the staff are thecustomers. Now Lex is stuck in the bizarro world of big-box retail. Coupon cutters, jerk customers, and learning exactly what a "Code B"really is (ew). And for added awkwardness, her new supervisor is the totally cute--and adorably geeky--Noah Grayson. Trying to balance her out-of-control mother, her pitching position on the softball team, and her secret crush on the school geek makes for one crazy summer. But ultimately, could the worst job in the world be the best thing that ever happened to her?… (altro)

I really liked this story about Alexis who gets caught shoplifting a tube of lipstick at the "SmartMart," a Walmart clone. As punishment for her crime, Lex will have to work at the store throughout the summer months when she would rather be playing softball and going to the beach with her friends. Enter Noah, manager in training at the SmartMart and Lex's boss; also the boy who "ratted out" her friend Bryce when he spray painted graffiti all over their rival school. At first she doesn't recognize Noah. To her dismay, she realizes who he is after she finds herself attracted to him. Is that attraction important enough to risk her friendships? That is one of several questions that Lex must answer in this story.
There are no deep mysteries, superpowers, or huge revelations in this book, but it is a nice coming of age story that shows how seeing the world through the eyes of someone else can change everything. In addition, a unique cast of supporting characters including a slightly mentally challenged coworker named Ruthie and a beauty pageant obsessed mother make this story a cut above the average teenage romance. Overall this one was quick easy reading that was fun and entertaining. ( )

Paper or Plastic is a cute and fun read. Alexis makes some pretty dumb mistakes, and she also learns that things aren’t always the way you thought they were. I adored the banter between Lex and Noah. It was believable and real.

I do wish that Lex would have trusted her friends a little more with her feelings regarding Noah. I did like that both of Lex’s parents are present, even when they don’t always see eye to eye. And I loved Lex’s grandmother.

Overall a fun read, and perfect for sitting outside and reading in the spring. ( )

"4 out of 5 stars! A girl tries to steal lipstick from SmartMart and is caught. As punishment, as well as to teach her responsibility, her mother gets the manager to hire her for the summer, much to her dismay. Overtime she finds that SmartMart is better than she perceived, most of the employees are really nice, and there is one hot assistant manager who is more than nice in getting to know. Yet, with life at home getting more difficult and the hot assistant manager actually being her best friend’s enemy will she be able to follow her instincts/her heart or will her fears about what everyone thinks get in the way?

Even though at times I wish Alexis (Lex/Lexus) was more forthright to her friends and Noah, I liked how this novel progressed from Lex being snobby to her putting effort into getting to know all her employees to her overcoming her previous misgivings. In addition, the trouble that Lex deals at home with her Grandmother and her mother made her a more complete character, which helped me like her as a character more. Together Noah and Lex are opposites that seem to balance one another out."
