IreneCole | Jul 27, 2022 |   My favorite was "The Price You Pay," by Kelley Armstrong. It is full of surprise twists and turns as the author gradually reveals what is really happening. I also enjoyed "Magic Eyes," by Bill Pronzini, although once I got to a certain point the ending was predictable. "Murder in Chains," by Simon Clark, was just starting to get interesting when it ended. It almost seems as if it's a piece of a larger story, with not quite enough context to make it satisfying. I didn't really care for Ramsey Campbell's "The Watched." I believe it was supposed to be suspenseful, but it just didn't quite work for me. Overall, it was an enjoyable reading experience, and a quick introduction to some authors I wasn't familiar with. I look forward to future volumes. I remember this story from the first Creepshow movie although the story here is not nearly as comic as the movie and much darker. King captures the spirit, dark humor, and fun of EC Comics perfectly. The kid who grew up on their stories grew up to write one which would have been one of their all time best. Yet, with King, despite the humor, the over the top cheesy dialogue and the fairly predictable plot he still manages to instill humanity to the character and make us care about him. The ending is also a real chiller. (5 stars) The Price You Pay by Kelley Armstrong Very dark crime story with several twists and turns along the way that tells us the nice guys don't always finish last. (3.5 stars) Magic Eyes by Bill Pronzini Interesting “Diary of a Madman” type story that actually uses the epistolary form very well. Well done with a great ending. (4.0) Murder in Chains by Simon Clark Our hero wakes to himself connected by a long chain to a huge homicidal maniac. The action is relentless as you would expect. What I did not expect was that this story would be so interesting that I wish that it was just the first chapter in a longer work. (4.5) The Watched by Ramsey Campbell Nightmarish. Surreal. Just what you would expect from Ramsey Campbell. I felt as disoriented and full of dread as the protagonist. (5.0) ( ) ChrisMcCaffrey | Apr 6, 2021 | The Stephen King story "Weeds" was part of the movie Creepshow. This is the one in which the King himself starred, where the meteor fell to earth in the man's backyard. In the movie, I thought the tale was hokey, but in the book I liked it more. We are privy to more of Jordy's inner thoughts, which makes it funnier, but at the same time, sadder. All the stories in this collection were pretty good, but I enjoyed the Pronzini tale, "Magic Eyes" the most. In my mind I called it the Diary of a Madman. There are only 5 shorts in this collection, so it can be read in no time at all. You won't find anything here to blow your mind, but these tales are well written, fun to read, and a great way to kill a winter afternoon. ( ) Charrlygirl | Mar 22, 2020 | 5 short horror stories. 4 of them are recent, one is from the 1970's. It seemed a little strange to include Stephen King's Weeds in this anthology. It was written so much longer ago than the other stories. But Weeds is still a great story and holds up well. I also very much enjoyed Magic Eyes. When the story abruptly ended, I was left wanting more. The story really grabbed hold of me, I was immersed in it so that it was a shock when it ended. The 3 remaining stories were also good. Not a bad story in the bunch. If you are looking for a quick read with some excellent horror writing, this is a good book to pick up. "The Boy" by Bentley Little was brilliant. Once again Bentley Little is able to take an ordinary every day experience such as settling in to a new neighborhood, and turn it into something horrifying. Christine the happy house wife is pleased to meet her new neighbors and discover that they are also home during the day. They have lots in common and will be the best of friends. I wish I could say more without giving away too much. Suffice it to say this story was shocking and quite relevant to current attitudes and events.
"The Palaver" by Kealan Patrick Burke also hit a high note for me. Poor Oscar has virtually no customers left in his failing barber shop. He spends more time sweeping up hair that isn't there than he does plying his trade. He doesn't want to retire. "It was his father's business and his grandfather's before him." As he is readying to close one day a stranger walks in, and tells him a story that will change everything.
"Walpuski's Typewriter" by Frank Darabont was both humorous and gruesome. A struggling writer with unpaid bills and a broken typewriter makes the deal of a lifetime to get it repaired.
These were my 3 favorites in the collection and I will leave at that so as not to avoid any spoilers.
I would highly recommend this volume (along with all previous volumes) to any horror fan.
