Note on the edition: I like reading old comics in their original four-panel layout, but it makes for a really crappy physical reading experience. This book seemed brand new when I got it and now the rear spine is separating at the hinge. I'm not even a careless reader; I'm a librarian, for pity's sake! It would be nice if the publisher would reinforce the binding to support the extra weight of the portrait layout. ( )

I have always loved this charming strip, full of warm humor and homespun affability and joy in the everyday goodness and dignity of ordinary people. In this book, Skeezix celebrates his second and third birthdays, and again Frank King impresses with his ability to show the gradual changes as time passes. This book is marked by insecurity as Walt legally adopts Skeezix, but discovers that the mysterious Mme. Octave is Skeezix's mother, intent on regaining custody, legally or otherwise. Eventually this leads to his kidnapping, with a harrowing chase and reunion. Walt's relationship with Mrs. Blossom deepens (he can now call her Phyllis), although she occasionally arouses his distrust because of her close relationship with Mme. Octave. There are a couple of warm and lovely visits with Walt's mother, and a footrace with Avery, both of which illustrate the simple unselfish nobility of Walt's character. This is a wonderful collection, long overdue, and my only quibble again is the unfortunate minisculity of the printing. Most Gasoline Alley fans are getting on in years, and one would think that the publishers would recognize the limitations of old eyebones. ( )
