During the day, George is the bravest kid on his block. But by night, that bravery melts to fear in his dark room. His parents are fed up with his fear of the dark and tell him not to make a sound. One night, George can't find his bear anywhere in his bed. It somehow ended up in the darkest corner of his room. Pushing fear aside, George fights the darkness to get to his little friend.

I remember being afraid of the dark as a kid. I still am at times. There's always that fear of something lurking in the darkness and, having a lot of toys, they all looked sinister. So I can understand where George is coming from when he's reluctant to get out of bed to get his bear. The illustrator really nails how scary the dark can be by keeping the spreads in sketched pencil lines. Everything is just out of focus and looks odd because of it. George really develops when he puts his fears aside to rescue his bear. He faces different toys in the dark and learns, in the end, that there really is nothing to be scared of. This is shown by the room suddenly being put into soft watercolors, with all of his toys back to their normal selves. ( )

Oh how my mom could have related to this book when I was growing up! I am like George to this day, I hate the dark!! George is actually a brave boy but not when it comes to the dark. He is terrified. One night he realizes his teddy bear is all the way across the room and he has no choice but to find a way to get him back. After many tries George finally gets him back and he feels braver than ever. I really liked this book. So many kids fear the dark and this is great book to make kids realize there is nothing to fear. This book is a great children's book because of its illustrations and theme. It is also great for both boys and girls and is easy to relate to because the theme is something that most individuals face. The story shows this theme of tackling fear in a fun and easy way that the students can relate to. Students could easily take notice of the way the young character faces the challenges of his fear in order to save his friend bear. ( )
