Free from her troubled past, Agent Kirsten Wren finds happiness mentoring Evan, a boy with similar talents with whom she soon forms a strong bond. Her efforts to help Dorian settle his past become complicated when a team of corporate "issue resolution consultants" continue their mission to kill a man in the afterlife. Kirsten gets involved when their postmortem grudge match spills into the realm of the living. At the scene of a surgical explosion that gutted only one floor of a residential tower, she discovers a strange arcane circle drawn in silver. There, she senses energy darker than any wraith she has yet encountered; a force that questions everything she believes about the world. Vikram Medhi, the hacker targeted by Lyris Corporation for elimination, begs her to protect him from undead out to destroy him. With no way to track these spirits, she seeks help from an enigmatic billionaire who offers her more than a simple translation of ancient Sumerian pictographs. Chasing down a dangerous psionic criminal in the oldest lawless zone in the city, trying to protect a man on a corporate death list, and trying to keep both of them from hurting the one person in the world she loves, Kirsten must reach deep within herself to accept her destiny.… (altro)

Psychic cop with paranormal abilities with ghost partner

Division Zero :Lex Dr Mortuis is book 2 in the series and I would suggest to read book one first. This book continues the story of the GOP with psychic abilities to stop ghosts from harming people but now some ghosts that went with the shadowy Harbingers below are coming back but are very different...stronger...some call them demons. Kristen is trying to find the one responsible for opening a hate for them meanwhile trying to bring in her dead partner's murderer in who is a top crime boss.
She is also trying to claim custody of a boy that has the rare abilities like hers and a horrible background like hers too! Pretty exciting! Stayed up all night to finish! ( )

I would like to thank author Curiosity Quills Press for granting me a copy of this e-book to read in exchange for an honest review. Though I received this e-book for free that in no way impacts my review.

Kirsten gets involved when their post-mortem grudge match spills into the realm of the living.

Chasing down a dangerous psionic criminal in the oldest lawless zone in the city, trying to protect a man on a corporate death list, and trying to keep both of them from hurting the one person in the world she loves, Kirsten must reach deep within herself to accept her destiny.

Another intriguing and exciting book in the Division Zero saga, this one expands Agent Kirsten Wren's character, giving her greater depth and vulnerability in different areas. Her love for Evan, the young boy she found and rescued, who happens to have the same psionic abilities she has, has taken her in a new direction. She draws strength from their relationship, especially as it grows stronger. Yet she's still a bit hesitant to let go and allow herself to believe it will all work out, as there is still a risk that she won't be granted guardianship for Evan. Just the thought of having him taken away from her is ripping her apart inside, but she can't allow him to see her fears. She learns to draw on her love for him to be stronger in the field than ever before before, all for his sake. Having someone dependent upon her is making her take less risks in the field, for she is terrified of dying if that means leaving him to grow up without her love and guidance.

Meanwhile, she continues to wrestle with her inappropriate feelings for her partner Dorian. Even if he did return her feelings it's not like they could ever have a truly satisfying relationship due to his unusual situation, not to mention the fact that he's still hung up on his former partner Nila, though she has no idea about his feelings for her. It would be the perfect love triangle if it weren't so strange. For Dorian's sake Kirsten tries to help Nila, only she ends up bringing danger straight to her door instead. Literally. Though she does learn some important things, things that could lead to a strong friendship between the two, if it doesn't make them into enemies that is.

Those are just background noise compared to the ghost that has come to Kirsten begging for her help. It seems that the people sent after him died when he did, but they somehow escaped from the Abyss (a.k.a. hell) to come back for him and kill him again, only this time in the afterlife. Apparently they had some help making their escape, and have come back as something more than your garden variety ghosts. Which means Kirsten is up against something new, with unknown levels of power. At their first meeting she discovers they are far stronger than anything she's ever encountered before, though that doesn't stop her from doing everything within her power to protect the innocent.

During all of the hectic events she handles, she is also finally making time to try dating seeing how Dorian simply isn't an option. Being psionic doesn't help her dating game, as every man she's tried dating has fled the moment they learn about she abilities. So when she meets not one, but two very different men who seem just fine with her the way she is, abilities and all, she is a very happy woman. Too bad her friends aren't all that fond of one of the men, making her question what's wrong with him. She also wonders if they might be right, as she isn't quite sure how she feels about him either, despite her overwhelming physical reaction to him.

Unlike the others on the force Kirsten is still completely reluctant to kill unless it is an absolute last resort. She always hopes that she can redeem the offenders, which keeps putting her in harm's way. Now that she has Evan to look after she is struggling to find a healthier balance between her safety and her conscience. This balancing act is a work in progress, with an interesting learning curve. And speaking of learning, something she's always wondered about gets answered in this book.

As always, not everything is as it appears on the surface. Once again Kirsten must find the truth that's buried in the midst of a heaps of half-truths and outright lies. But will she discover the truth in time to save herself while still protecting Evan and the other innocents she's collected in this story? The level of sustained suspense works well in this book, giving the reader rest breaks before ramping the suspense up even higher. This cycle is repeated several times throughout the book, each time the level of suspense increases, finally reaching nail-biting status by the end. ( )
