Victor Green is 37, unmarried and the sort of man who irons his underpants. When pruning his tree, he falls from his ladder and kills the pedestrian below - the gangster Tommy 'Gruesome' Hewson. As word spreads of the gangster's demise, Victor is mistaken for Vincent Green, an international hitman, and swept into a turf war between two local gangs. The hapless Victor's life is turned upside down as he inherits Tommy's poodle, gets a girlfriend and is recruited to fight in both gangs, accidentally leaving a trail of bodies in his wake as he tries to figure out what seems to be a horrific misunderstanding. This was a lay-back, amusing, and coincidental action thriller. It was a predictable adventurous story that kept me caught up in the far-fetched events and nerdy characters. It was a fast read and a change of venue throughout the book. Some dry humor here and there but sill enjoyable….great read….
The main character, Victor Green is a magnetically charming thirty-seven year old man. He is a mild harmless individual getting on with his life working at a Tax office and following his everyday domestic routine when he suddenly finds himself in the middle of a situation he cannot control and doesn’t understand.
He has been sent a letter from the Council of The Isle of Wright to prune his trees back. This disturbed him because he was afraid of heights but he knew the chore must be done. Finding his way up the ladder he gets spooked by a pigeon that flew by him and he falls uninjured landing on a man who was walking his poodle. Victor is shocked the man under him was dead and later finds out by the Constable Alan Grimes that it was no great loss, it was only Tommy Hewson, well known to the mob as Gruesome Hewson and he was a vicious killer. Filled with guilt Victor feels bad and goes to the kennel to rescue the French Poodle and named him Fluffy….
As the story unfolds an article in the newspaper reported the accident but also reported his name as Vincent Green which was an alias of the most powerful sought after assassin who works for the mob, Vincenzo Verdi….Than Victor received a letter with a check of twenty thousand dollars with a message saying, “Be more discreet next time”. Than he started being in the wrong place at the wrong time….leaving trails of notorious villains dead bodies behind and more money coming in the mail….soon Victor is caught up in war between to gang groups called, “The Blue Brothers” and “The Pretty Boys”. Plus, a lady takes an interest in him and he is initially transported to high revelations and soon later finds out he wants out of the relationship…..
Jan Toms writes a great story and created some marvelous characters, Alan Grimes close to retirement and recently widowed, his daughter Charity who feels it’s her duty to take care of her father and fed him lentils to keep him healthy, and followed-up on the case he was working on to keep him safe. She was really forward and a pushy person who ended the story with a shocking revelation of her own….And we still have the gang members, Reggie, Randy, and Dodge of “The Blue Brothers”, and Harry, Garry, and Barry of “The Pretty Boys” and last, the notorious ankle biting vicious French Poodle, “Fluffy”…..
