Megg is a depressed, drug-addicted witch. Mogg is her black cat. Their friend, Owl, is an anthropomorphized owl. They hang out a lot with Werewolf Jones. This may sound like a pure stoner comedy, but it transcends the genre: these characters struggle unsuccessfully to come to grips with their depression, drug use, sexuality, poverty, lack of work, lack of ambition, and their complex feelings about each other in ways that have made Megg and Mogg sensations on Hanselmann's Girl Mountain Tumblr. This is the first collection of Hanselmann's work, freed from its cumbersome Internet prison, and sure to be one of the most talked about graphic novels of 2014, featuring all of the "classic" Megg and Mogg episodes from the past five years as well as over 70 pages of all-new material.… (altro)

What a fucking trip. The art style is insane and conveys the feeling of being a giant burnout who is dealing with depression. People really need to get a content warning about the sexual assault carried out throughout the book. ( )

LOVED this! A wacky out of control collection of comics about a witch and her weird anthropomorphic friends. Basically all they do is drink, get stoned, pick on their weird alcoholic owl friend, go to parties, watch TV (they secretly love iCarly), deal with depression, and do weird sex stuff. It's off the wall weird and I love the characters. Werewolf Jones is the life of the party, Owl just wants his friends to like him sober and not get made fun of so much, Megg just wants to smoke and find a way to battle her depression, and Mogg is the most stoned and horny cat you've ever seen. Whimsically drawn and filled in with watercolor, this comic series doesn't take it's self seriously and is bizarrely hilarious. ( )

This book made me very sad. That is not a criticism, but a testament to its power--the power to represent the perfect sadness of a wasted life in suburbia that is filled with nothing but alcohol, marijuana and the occasional hallucinogen. Megahex shows the lives of three room mates who don't often recognize that they are sad, who try to fill the void by picking on one another. Good grief, they can't even manage to enjoy having sex with one another!

Hanselmann really struck a nerve. Its been over 25 years since I encountered behavior like this in college, but bad and sad memories came rushing right back. ( )
