"Civilization and the New Frontier" contains four essays by one of the leading scholars engaged in discussions of the relationship between science and religion in the field of space exploration. Bishop Heiser is a founding member of the Mars Society and currently serves on the Board of Directors and Steering Committee of that organization. He has also served in parish ministry for fourteen years and has been bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America since 2006. The essays in this volume focus on the relationship between Virtue and the establishment of a civilization and draw on the wisdom of philosophers, scientists and theologians of over twenty centuries to address the issues of expanding human civilization beyond the confines of Earth. The author goes into differences in cultures and how that plays into whether exploration and expansion of civilization goes on rapidly or slowly. He also delves into happiness of the different cultures through time and how colonization and pioneer life and even community action relates to that.
This book provides a very good foundation of the history and current status of cultural values and how colonization and establishment of new communities is related to our culture.
The author shows how cultures that promote settlement, community projects, and cooperation historically have been happier than those which valued no community cohesion, competition, and personal comfort and power, which have not been a happy group, usually disappearing over time.
This is a short book at 75 pages on culture and values so no illustrations. The author uses numerous examples and quotes from other sources and authors. It was written mostly to augment the technical reasons why we should or should not proceed to establish pioneers on Mars.
The cultural topics are very relevant, and apply to more than just the Mars instance. Everyone should read and follow the author's discussion on this aspect of culture and values. ( )
