Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:

An inspiring and achingly honest story of a girl with the courage to endure, hope, and even heal in the face of unimaginable tragedy, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen's Just Listen.

I have three months left to call Katie my older sister. Then the gap will close and I will pass her. I will get older. But Katie will always be fifteen, eleven months and twenty-one days old.

Hannah has survived high school by putting up walls. At first, they were meant to protect her from the relentless bullying that no one would defend her from, not even her popular older sister, Katie. Then Katie died, and, in a cruel twist of fate, Hannah's daily torment abruptly stopped. Now the walls try to shut it all out-the grief, the loneliness, and the harsh truth that Katie's death has somehow improved Hannah's life.

Then something happens that Hannah couldn't have predicted-friendship comes knocking in the form of new student Josh Chamberlain. Hannah has never been so desperate for connection. But if this isn't for real, if it's just another joke, Hannah's not sure she can take it.

Praise for Protected:
"Zorn shows the devastating effects of bullying while affectingly tracing Hannah's spiritual journey, coming to terms with truths she doesn't want to face and learning how to trust. " â??Publishers Weekly, Starred Review
"Though the book tackles important issues, it reaches far beyond these flash points into a fully developed exploration of the aftermath of tragedy through strong characterization and genuine emotional appeal."-Kirkus, Starred Review… (altro)

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this lovely and insightful work by Claire Zorn. "The Protected" examines and seeks to work apart the effect the loss of a family member has on those who are left behind. We are introduced to Hannah and her parents nearly a year after her sister Kate was killed in an accident, where the family has been reduced to shattered crumbs. And the narrative style choice is interesting. It's very fragmented, which fits well with the mental state of all those involved. Sometimes the narrative seems to slow a bit, as we don't get to the truly meaningful questions of what happened to Hannah and what happened the day of the accident until late in the book, but the questions asked and their answers are very effective. It is a painful situation, and that is handled very appropriately. I loved the secondary characters, and the relationshps that formed with the protagonist.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author. ( )

All members of our book club found Protected as powerfully accurate in its depiction of bullying and grief. Anne the counsellor as well as Josh were the most loved characters for their supportive role in the story, and Katie was the least liked due to her selfish and problematic behaviour towards Hannah. Some members felt that the writing was a little choppy in places, making it difficult to follow the story. Overall, this was a thought provoking read and the aggregate score for the book is 6.8/10. The one thing that annoys me about this book is that there is no way that whatever I read next can possibly be as good. My one word review would be: amazing.

It's like the author was challenging herself to make the reader teary at least every second chapter or so. I wouldn't recommend reading this in the train or in public like I did (unless you have sunglasses, it's ok with sunglasses).

Can not wait to see what Claire Zorn does next. Very quickly climbing my list of favourite authors. Highly recommend this for anyone. ( )

I read the first half of this novel thinking "Could this novel get any bleaker?" But I was compelled to read to the end and I was actually surprised at how much I wanted to finish it. I found that I was engaged, but the whole resolution was twee and unbelievable. Please can we have a novel where the vulnerable, emotionally-compromised female is not "saved" by the witty, gorgeous guy? ( )
