Short stories from an expat Sri Lankan who I enjoy generally quite a bit. He’s written close to a dozen books and I’ll admit that I have found a clunker or two among them, but when he hits it, he writes wonderfully. These stories have a thread in common: they all share a narrator taking people (generally foreigners) to different parts of the island. The narrator tends to see things that one might expect to be familiar through new eyes—the eyes of those he is accompanying. The commentary is thus about both the visitors and the narrator and, inevitably, the island. Gunesekera has always been concerned about the price of the civil war; this volume is no different and he always manages to find a poignancy, a deep hurt that he expresses more by omission than anything else. Recommended. ( ) A nicely structured book not of short stories but episodes in a life. A minibus (van) driver in Sri Lanka tells of his journeys and his passengers. Short encounters and short visits. People getting only a partial view of each other. Each adopting and living a role. We learn something of Sri Lanka in the aftermath of war and tsunami but in the end we only touch on the driver's life just as if we'd been one of his passengers. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

"The driver's job is to stay in control behind the wheel and that is all. The past is what you leave as you go. There is nothing more to it. Vasantha retired early, bought himself a van with his savings, and now works as a driver for hire. As he drives through Sri Lanka, carrying aid workers, businessmen and families, meeting lonely soldiers and eager hoteliers, he engages them with self-deprecating wit and folksy wisdom, and reveals for us their uncertain, difficult lives. On his journey from the army camps in northern Jaffna to the moonlit ramparts of Galle, in the south, he begins to discover the depth of the problems of the past--his own and his country's--and the promise the future might hold. From the writer praised by The Guardian for the "vivid originality" of his vision, here is a wonderful collection--perceptive, somber, finely tuned--which draws a potent portrait of postwar Sri Lanka and the ghosts of civil war"-- Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
