New York Times They met at school and have been inseparable ever since: Cecile, confident, elegant daughter of privilege; Norma, extraordinarily gifted and sadly troubled; and beautiful, ambitious Amanda, determined to rise above her humble southern beginnings. Two are married. One despairs of ever finding love. Three women. Leading their busy adult lives. Yet first and always: friends. Then something unexpected happens that forever alters their long, complicated friendship. A pivotal event, a shattering act of betrayal shifts the balance of power between husbands and wives, parents and children, sisters and brothers. And in the months that follow, each of them will look at their families, their lives--and one another--differently. And none of them will ever be the same.… (altro)

Interesting read. Interesting moral issues. ( )

They were the most unlikely friends - kind, rich Cecile, brave, talented Norma and Amanda the poor girl they met at college. But behind the facade lies a secret that could tear the three friends apart. I was searching for a picture to go in this post and came across some reviews of Looking Back - the majority of the readers didn't like the book at all. I have to admit that I loved this book myself but then, I love Belva Plain's work. In my opinion, she was a brilliant author. She will be missed very dearly.

I enjoyed this book very much and will give it an A+! I tend to ignore readers' reviews until I've read the book, I notice. Sometimes you miss some really good books if you listen totally to readers' reviews, in my opinion. ( )

This book is set in modern times however all the characters talk and act like they should be part of their parent's generation which gives the story the feeling of being stuck in a kind of time-warp. On top of that complaint, the stories of these 3 old college buddies didn't really generate much interest with me. I ended up just skimming most of this book. ( )

The absolutely worst Belva Plain book that I have ever read! The dialogue was stilted and unbelievable, painful to read. ( )

LB found himself seperated from reality where his grandson (really his son)was concerned. He couldn't seem to act "normally" around the child, and Amanda couldn't act like a real mother, knowing the child wasn't her husbands. Norma thought she had seen her father with her sister-in-law once holding hands, but decided she was wrong when Amanda said she and Larry were having a baby. There was a party and LB was made to hold the baby "Stevie." Needless to say, the relationship between the father and daughter-in-law grew distant, but constant.
Amanda, girlfriend, lost twins and this makes it all so sad.
Norma, also girlfriend and husbands sister is picking up on negative signals.
Norma's photographic memory shocked me. How could friends do that to each other. Loved cecile. ( )

(Prologue) At a country inn on the coast of Maine, two men of a certain age, sitting on porch chairs some distance apart, watched the swollen, olive-green Atlantic crash on the rocks below. (Chapter one) Books, purses, three empty bottles of Diet Coke, and the remains of a large pizza littered the card table that had been set up near the open window.
