Biography & Autobiography. Travel. Nonfiction. HTML:

Carsick is the New York Times bestselling chronicle of a cross-country hitchhiking journey with America's most beloved weirdo.

John Waters is putting his life on the line. Armed with wit, a pencil-thin mustache, and a cardboard sign that reads "I'm Not Psycho," he hitchhikes across America from Baltimore to San Francisco, braving lonely roads and treacherous drivers. But who should we be more worried about, the delicate film director with genteel manners or the unsuspecting travelers transporting the Pope of Trash?
Before he leaves for this bizarre adventure, Waters fantasizes about the best and worst possible scenarios: a friendly drug dealer hands over piles of cash to finance films with no questions asked, a demolition-derby driver makes a filthy sexual request in the middle of a race, a gun-toting drunk terrorizes and holds him hostage, and a Kansas vice squad entraps and throws him in jail. So what really happens when this cult legend sticks out his thumb and faces the open road? His real-life rides include a gentle eighty-one-year-old farmer who is convinced Waters is a hobo, an indie band on tour, and the perverse filmmaker's unexpected hero: a young, sandy-haired Republican in a Corvette.
Laced with subversive humor and warm intelligence, Carsick is an unforgettable vacation with a wickedly funny companionâ??and a celebration of America's weird, astonishing, and generous citizenry.… (altro)

I glanced at the Goodreads reviews before I started reading this book (which I don't normally do), and from that I learned that the first two sections of this book are actually fiction. And partway through the first one, I was very glad it was fiction, especially since it is from the warped and twisted mind of John Waters. The first section, entitled "the best that could happen," is his fantasy trip. It includes adoring fans, wild parties, fantasy film funding and lots and lots of dicks. As a woman I guess I'll never be able to comprehend the male sex drive, but this is beyond anything I could imagine. In fact, some of his "best" adventures made me wonder what the "worst" could be. I didn't have to wait long. I couldn't even finish this section. I confess I skipped over the last couple of rides because the terror-drenched misadventure Waters conjures up was too much for me! With relief I moved on to the nonfiction section, the real story. And I understood why he wrote the fantasies, because the real story was much less interesting. Waiting for hours in the elements, finally getting picked up by nice, though bland and achingly normal people (except maybe Corvette Kid)... It just isn't as compelling. So, I enjoyed parts of this, but mostly I'm just glad I got through it. ( )

Liked the non-fiction parts: The introduction and the last third. The other two-thirds were sometimes funny but mostly tedious. ( )

Two star because only 1/3 of the book was real traveling. I am a fan of John Waters, and even if I don't like one if his projects, I will continue to be a fan. I skipped his fictional accounts and just read the real stuff, which was in-remarkable. Overall the concept looked good on paper, but didnt work out in real life. Just my opinion. ( )

Waters tells his story three times--the best scenario, the worst, and what actually happened. The first two options are incredibly obscene but with Waters reading his own book and being the personable likeable character he is, it is mostly borderline hysterical if you are not the offendable type. The true story of his Baltimore-to-San Francisco journey lacks the obscenity and is quite endearing as a diverse group gets him across the country--in between interminable waits beside the interstate on-ramp. Highly recommended. ( )

Just as ridiculous, hilarious, salacious, and highly questionable as you might imagine. ( )
