Making the case for adopting more sustainable modes of transportation, this engaging reference explores the economic benefits of bicycling. It starts with an analysis of the real costs incurred by individuals and families in existing transportation systems and goes on to examine the current civic expenses of these systems. With critiques of modern society's deep-rooted attachment to car culture, this book tells the stories of people, businesses, organizations, and cities who are investing in two-wheeled transportation. Offering a fresh and compelling perspective on how people get from place to place, this book reveals the multifaceted North American bicycle movement with its contradictions, challenges, successes, and visions for the future.… (altro)

Just Ride: A Radically Practical Guide to Riding Your Bike di Grant Petersen (Booktacular)
Booktacular: Blue's book covers the topic of why you can and should make bicycling a much bigger part of your daily life. Petersen's book explains in clear and often entertaining terms how to go about doing that. Both are meant to apply to the majority of bicycling adults and both do a fantastic job in that regard!… (altro)

Bicycling can make the world go 'round, and could give your local economy a boost. ( )

Started out quite predictably; by the book's midpoint I was a bicycle activist. ( )

I really thought this was a well-written book. The arguments that are made can seem like they are very Portland specific, but Blue then draws them out far enough that we see their universal applications. With each chapter I kept thinking of different people whom I wanted to read this book, just so I could discuss it with them. I also enjoyed learning that having a feminist take on bicycling essentially amounts to the same thing as having a much more thoughtful and cross-cultural take on bicycling. Blue has clearly taken a long look at the statistics and a deep and insightful look into her own city and the effects that bicycling has had there and then put those thoughts into this book. In fact, the only fault I found with this work was the need for a slightly higher level of editing as there were several typos and misspellings which distracted's very slightly from the impact of the piece as a whole. But still a fantastic book that I highly recommend to bikers and non-bikers alike. ( )

"This zine is a follow up to my series of columns on Grist exploring the economic impact and potential of bicycle transportation. The zine provides an accessible overview of the economic arguments for investing in bicycling on a personal and a civic scale. Read it for a primer on the numbers behind our current transportation crisis, as preparation for testifying to your city council in favor of investing in bike infrastructure, or as the ultimate rebuttal to the myth that people on bicycles don't pay their own way."
