She made a bargain with the Gold King and typical of bargains with him he got the most. She's at college now, as she requested, though ladies college isn't teaching her what she needs to know and she can be called away by Keating at any time. But she almost doesn't care because Nick is dead, Tobias is married, and Imogen is in a coma, kept alive only by Evalina's magic. Her only comforts are the secret letters she gets from her Uncle and the educational assistance she gets from Professor Moriarty. Twisting the knife, Keating assigns Tobias as Evelina's jailer and sends them both to help her Uncle Sherlock investigate the murder of Sir Charles Baskerville. Dr. Watson's story tells of a demonic hound and they believe Evelina's magic can help them. But really, Nellie Reynolds has escaped from the laboratories were magic users are experimented upon and Evelina will play a crucial part in destroying them. This book had an amazing number of balls in the air and managed to connect them all. The Steam Barons' war happens, we learn much about the Black Kingdom, the Baskerville Conspiracy is revealed, and Captain Niccolo becomes so much more than a pirate. Also, Imogen comes into her own, as do Poppy and Alice, who have become good friends, and as do the members of SPIE who have come very far from the escapade with the mechanical squid. I also so much loved how things ended for Tobias. I thought that his dying from poison wasn't enough, that his attempts at redemption through siding with the rebels weren't enough. But dying and being reborn as the Black King? Now he has a chance to make up for all he's done. Now he can change. Evelina's storyline as Magnus' prisoner was sad to read. Her temptation was clear as was her heartbreak. I'm sorry for her and for what she had to do, but I'm glad she has Nick to encourage her to master her power instead of allowing it to master her. I'm also glad he agreed to her bargain, to never let her become like Magnus. (Provided by publisher) (  ) tldegray | Sep 21, 2018 | Poor Evie does not get a break after the events in A Study in Darkness, and the third book becomes even more Gothic and intense as all the plot knots start unravelling. I'm glad that what felt like a love triangle in book #1, completely resolves itself by the end of the second book, which is only natural in the set of circumstances. Both Tobias and Evelina get on with their lives and various challenges they represent, and outgrow their feelings for each other, especially Evie who sees Tobias far more clearly than he sees her, and who typically fell in love with him like most of us - for his potential, not for his actions. Nick stays his scrumptious self and I as usual do not have any complaints about his dashing piratical persona - he is a lovely character! *grinning maniacally* Evie... *raises her glass* is going to the dark side, and oh boy, when she goes - she goes. This is one of the reasons why this book was so fascinating for me to read. That pull of dark magic she experiencing is only gonna get stronger in A Study of Ashes, and actually she deals with it in a spectacular way. Much of the book is also dedicated to Imogen, Mouse and Bird's adventures. While they were not bad, they were not my favourite part of the plot even if they gave the reader more interactions with Bucky and charming Poppy. Overall, A Study in Ashes brings all the characters together in an explosive way. Expect some dark twists, shocking deaths and epic battles. I'll say no more as I don't want to give you any spoilers. Mrs. Holloway did a great job in tying up all of the loose ends, even if it did take to the last page to do so. I loved the way she finished the story, while still leaving things open enough that if she decides to revisit this world, she can do so and continue the story.
I only have 2 complaints. First is the way the Magnus story ended. It felt rushed and anticlimatic considering how much of a threat he had been in the last 2 books. Then the war that had been building up over the previous 2 books ended in entirely too fast. It should have lasted a lot longer than what was shown in the books.
That being said, the entire trilogy is definitely going on me reread shelf, along with other greats such as The Wheel of Time, The Dresden Files, and The Secret Histories saga. (
