She was a monster, sleek and gleaming, designed to strike without warning like the dreaded shark. She was the USS Mako, as fearless and bold as any submarine that ever prowled the blue Pacific. Her mission: seek out and destroy the hitherto invincible ships of the Japanese Imperial Navy-and revenge the earlier defeats of a long and dirty war. Here is the story of the men who pitted their lives against impossible odds in the most dangerous branch of the American armed services. It is a story of men pushed to the breaking point and beyond in the most nerve-wracking, heart-stirring warfare of all. A story of glory, grit, and guts, and of the astonishing resources that human beings call forth when put to the ultimate test. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

The submarine captains have been claiming that the American torpedoes are faulty and when Hinman discovers the reason, he goes against orders and modifies them. When the modifications make the torpedoes work properly, he tells other submarine captains and as a result is removed from command and misses being court marshaled by a hair.
When a noted disciplinarian ai appointed as his replacement, the crew expects the worse. That worst turns out to be a patrol where the Mako meets the top Japanese anti-sub technician in a battle of survival.
The novel is packed with action, naval political intrigue with positive views of FDR and not so much of General MacArthur. It does include an interesting description of the reception the US sailors received from the Australian population when there on shore leave. ( )
