While the story lacked a real coherent flow, i couldn't stop reading it - it made me have so much more respect for the average NFL player -- this sport is brutal! ( )
Written by a very young man, with all of the positives and negatives that implies. I'm reminded of the Ray Romano joke about his son: "he brags about things he should never admit."
But it's fairly essential from the standpoing of watching the NFL, both in terms of knowing the (human) costs associated, but also in terms of understanding how management works there. All the secrets of why good teams succeed and terrible teams are terrible are right here. ( )
There are a few time Jackson's style get's a bit carried away, but for the most part, it works. The NFL as a surreal experience of pain and violence is just devastating. The injury reports in particular are chilling. ( )
Autobiographical account of an NFL player's injury-plagued 7 year career. It is a quite an entertaining read. Jackson's memoir is candid, wryly humorous, and quite thoughtful. It's a vivid portrayal of what it's like to a be an NFL player, not a superstar, but a player on the fringes who is constantly looking over his shoulder for fear of losing his oh-so-tenuous job - and physical health. Jackson, out of the NFL by age 29 and never a starter, actually had a career that was much longer, better, and more lucrative than the average. He is a talented writer. Good to read during football season. ( )

Why did football bring me so to life? I can't say precisely. Part of it was my feeling that football was an island of directness in a world of circumspection. In football a man was asked to do a difficult and brutal job, and he either did it or got out. There was nothing rhetorical or vague about it; I chose to believe that it was not unlike the jobs which all men, in some sunnier past, had been called upon to do. It smacked of something old, something traditional, something unclouded by legerdemain and subterfuge. It had that kind of power over me, drawing me back with the force of something known, scarcely remembered, elusive as integrity -- perhaps it was no more than the force of a forgotten childhood. Whatever it was, I gave myself up to the Giants utterly. The recompense I gained was the feeling of being alive.

While I'm in [the pantry] I inspect the area and find a collection of turds in the corner. I'm not surprised, as I often poop there. But in the opposite corner of the pantry is a collection of much smaller turds: mice! The next day at rehab I can hardly contain myself. I relay the story of the mouse to everyone in the training room. When I'm done with my workout I go to Home Depot. By now they know me.
