I was glad to see that the story that began in [b:Ghostbusters: Who Ya Gonna Call?|28862488|Ghostbusters Who Ya Gonna Call?|Erik Burnham|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1460908650s/28862488.jpg|49093058] was continued here.

All the Ghostbusters (Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston) have been captured and dumped in another dimension. Three months passed and Janine Melnitz, Kylie Griffin, and Melanie Ortiz with the forced assistance of Ron Alexander are the new Ghostbusters. They have some difficult jobs, but have been doing okay but still miss their friends and mentors. Kylie ends up at the "Hospital" where she encounters the Dr. who gave up his soul to the evil spirit that controls the collectors. The Ghostbusters figure out a way to return to New York just in time. Now that there are two ghostbusting teams, what is New York going to do?

The illustrations were great in this book and it brought back memories of the original movies that I watched many years ago. This book would be enjoyed by young and older persons alike, especially those that saw those original movies.

I read this in advance of the upcoming movie (which I am eagerly anticipating).

In this one, the original Ghostbusters have all been kidnapped by spirits and taken to some sort of alternate dimension. So the ladies have to step into their shoes, and try to get the boys back while holding other ghosts at bay.

Unfortunately, I didn't get sucked into the story. The women felt like placeholders for the real thing, and the story was a little muddled. (I'm still not entirely sure exactly how these kidnappings were arranged, or why.) I enjoyed the subplot with the mayor trying to convince the ladies to wear short shorts and do publicity appearances, though. All in all, this was just an OK read for me.

I try to avoid re-reviewing books, but sometimes I make exceptions — if the original review was too short or if the context of the reading has changed significantly enough that I feel a need to revisit the review. In 2013 I reviewed a partial egalley edition of Ghostbusters, Volume 5: The New Ghostbusters by Erik Burnham without the context of the entire series of graphic novels and without the entire omnibus in hand. That now has changed, as I purchased a full copy to continue my reading after finishing Total Containment.

The first four omnibuses (or sixteen comic issues) introduced all the characters, the original ghostbusters and then the characters who in this issue become the "New Ghostbusters" with the disappearance of the original crew.

Now in the copy I read before, the book ended with Janine finally getting her way with the mayor's office, after they had demanded "sexy" outfits for the women on the team. The full omnibus includes the escape from the ghost prison and the consequences of their return.

I still enjoyed The New Ghostbusters and I certainly appreciated seeing how all the pieces fit together, rather than trying to guess based on my original cold reading. But (and this is my own inner fangirl speaking), I wanted more scenes with Janine and the FBI agent from New Mexico. Fortunately, some of that plays out in Ghostbusters Volume 6: Trains, Brains and Ghostly Remains. ( )
