This took me quite a while to read, but it is a mostly interesting blend of current travel with historical episodes recounted. The author and family members and friends retraced the western trails in the early 1940s. The LDS section was pretty short, but there were some good stories retold. The Oregon and California trail pioneers often had a rough time of it! ( )
Devotion and study such as this deserve high praise in themselves and "The Wake of the Prairie Schooner" is a valuable addition to the printed lore of the West. Research students will welcome it for its factual content and for its previously unpublished material. It is to be doubted if the casual reader, or even the seasoned historian, will exult in its style. For, regrettably, "The Wake of the Prairie Schooner'' is much too long and its content is so confused that even those accustomed to delving in the bottomless depths of Western history will have trouble disentangling dates and names.
“With side lights on Mormons, Indians, Marcus Whitman, and other topics, this ‘diary’ ranks high in readability and probably stands as the final mapping of the old trails. A preface by Professor H. E. Bolton, pen-and-ink sketches by the author, and eleven sectional maps are not the least of the interesting aspects of this remarkable book.”—American Historical Review Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
