As the captain of a schooner catering to the elite on the Caribbean Seas, Sebastian Stark does his best to avoid any human encounters. Interacting with people isn't his thing, and he prefers the company of a bottle of vodka, a shot glass, and maybe a whore. There's no doubt he's hiding from a checkered past, but he does well keeping everything to himself . . . until the night his schooner capsizes, and he's stuck on a life raft with one of the passengers. Raine's young, she's cute, and Bastian would probably be into her if he wasn't suffering from alcohol withdrawal. As the days pass, DTs, starvation, and dehydration become the norm. Even the most closed person starts to open up when he thinks he's going to die, but when she realizes their traumatic pasts are connected, it's no longer the elements that have Bastian concerned. He has no idea how he's going to survive Raine. Contains mature themes.… (altro)

This was a random pick from Amazon. What an amazing read. It was told entirely in first person past tense from the hero's POV. This guy was the epitome of the anti hero. He was an asshole and a jerk. He was an alcoholic and a man whore. And those were the better bits of him. When his ship sinks and he is stranded with an innocent young woman his life begins to change as he learns to love her. It was wonderful to watch him come to the realization that he would do anything to save her, anything to keep her from a moment's sadness. The heroine is fairly well rounded, as much as possible when the book is told from his POV and he's crazy about her. I liked her though. She fell in love with him and was determined to convince him that he was worth loving. I like heroine's who are not wishy washy about their love for the hero.

If you like tortured heroes this is definitely the book for you. I don't know as I've ever read a book where the hero hated himself quite so much. His voice was crass and real. I loved how he really seemed like a guy telling you his story.

The only thing I didn't like was the epilogue. It just seemed like unnecessary sequel bait and really I felt it took away from the satisfying feeling I got from the end of the book. That's a small quibble though and I'm just going to ignore it. ( )

This book was very different than I expected. There is no mistaking that this author can draw her audience in. Just like in Transcendence, I enjoyed the smallest of details that she used in setting a scene in regards to survival and how to live in adverse or unusual circumstances.

Sad backstory of Bastian. I can tell there is a lot more to come in the conclusion. ( )

This book wasn't for me. The 'hero' is a mess and I understand why but I didn't like him and his treatment/view of others.

I love this book, and I love Sebastian Stark.
I continue to love every book I read from Shay Savage.
I guess she can't write a bad book after all. ;)

Bastian is technically not a good guy. I love how damaged he is yet what a wonderful man he is under all of that.
"No matter what actual words come out of my mouth—every time I think of you, every time I touch you, and every time I speak to you—I am making love to you."

He is seriously f'd up and seriously someone I would want on my team no matter what the situation. He is a survivor.

I love and recommend this book. ( )

If this book would have picked a side and stayed on it I think it would have worked so much better. Having the POV totally be from the male perspective was interesting but after a while his degrading thoughts on women got a bit annoying. If the story would have strickly stuck with him and Raine being castaways lost at sea and all the inventive things they had to do to stay alive I would have rated this higher because those scenes were very realistic. All the scenes of Sebastian going through alcohol withdrawl were spot on. It was the flashback scenes of Sebastian's life that went a little too far into the science fiction realm that just didnt blend in with the current day setting and circumstances. ( )
