Summary: This book is about Ruby Bridges and how she was the first black American child in white schools. During her growing up this was about segregation, and whites and blacks had nothing to do with each other. Ruby was told that she could attend the white school because it is closer to her house. So she went to this school and all of the white parents pulled their children out of the school because they were not going to go to school with a black girl. Mrs. Henry,her teacher,taught just Ruby because no one else was left in the class with her. When her second grade year started the kids were coming back to school and she was finally making friends. Famous people wrote and painted about her and her bravery to make it where black Americans and whites could go to school together.
Personal Reaction: This was a good book and I like the way it is written because it will help children learn about the past and how far we have come. It is a book that is easy for young children to read.
Classroom Extension Ideas: We could use this book during the black history month, so that the students can learn about the black people that have made a difference in our history. ( )
