Books like this make me wish for a different star labeled "important to read". This book is an important piece of American history that he covers in writing about what it was like to live through drought. This would be a great read for all students in learning to understand the desolation of share croppers, as well as how far technology has brought us.

Yes, Woody Guthrie wrote a novel. A cousin sent me a copy of this book, which she said she loved in concept, but couldn't engage with. I had the same problem. I read enough of it to get the feel of Guthrie's writing, which I would call a cross between Steinbeck and D. H. Lawrence in both style and subject. The trouble is, having read The Grapes of Wrath and Lady Chatterley's Lover a couple times each, 50 pages of this one was enough to tell me there wasn't anything more in it for me. Kudos to Guthrie for one of the longest and least obnoxious sex scenes ever written, though.

This book was never published in its author, Woodie Guthrie's, life time. It was written in 1947 as almost a social history of the dustbowl years, it was not available to the reader until 2013. This gap may seem to have killed any relevance, not so: it brings to life a time when people were expendable - a situation which is worryingly reoccurring in the present day.

Guthrie was a man of wisdom way beyond his education; he was kind; he was fearless and it is not surprising that he became a hero to so many of the artists who became my heroes (most notably, Bob Dylan). (

Full of life, sex, humour, politics, nonsense language and Jesus as a socialist. Great female characters. I loved this.

Great way to celebrate Woody's birthdday, reading this. (
