Not a bad story, but not the best I've read either.
I thought the story was a bit boring at first, it took a long time before it really took off. In my view the real story starts when Risgan reaches Thornkeep, which is at about a third of the story, and I found the first third of the book rather slow.
I did enjoy the later part when Risgan is a prisoner at Thornkeep. These later parts are very imaginative and original, and I really liked the descriptions of the weird, magical world Risgan finds himself in. I do think the characters could have been worked out more, it might have been nice to get to know these characters better, find out more about their lives.
One thing I found somewhat annoying was the language use; the language used is somewhat archaic, which I guess is meant to show that we are not in our own world, but to me it sometimes seemed a bit forced and unnatural.

Only after having finished the story I noticed that the story is in fact part of a larger work, with more adventures of Risgan. It might be the case that if you read the complete work the first part of this story also fits in better. The other parts might also give more information about the characters. ( )
