This collection of stories and photographs traces the fascinating history of Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching. A popular destination for cottagers and pleasure-seekers today, these lakes were once part of the essential inland waterway that opened up the region and the North American interior to waves of Indians and explorers, fur traders and soldiers, and settlers and entrepreneurs who carved out an existence from the wilderness. The book includes over 100 stories and 170 archival images that will enliven any journal on or around these beautiful waters. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

Frim organized her tales geographically starting at the southern tip of Lake Simcoe and following the western shoreline north to Barrie and Orillia and then along the same western shore of Lake Couchiching to the northern tip at Washago where she turns south back to the southern tip of Lake Simcoe. She describes important buildings, usually accompanied by a picture, important men & women who contributed to the development of the area also frequently accompanied by a picture and the lake itself which progressed from a source of food and easy travel to one that is now predominately used for recreation.
Place names such as Bell Ewart, Sutton, Keswick, Guillimbury, Ramara, Brechin and Uptergrove are some places she explains the reason the community developed where it did and where the name came from.
This is great local history which would make a great driving adventure. ( )
