First published in 2004, the Grumman Goose book tells the story of the small twin engined utility seaplane first designed in 1937 for 10-wealthy business men to replace their Loening Air Yachts. In US service, the Army was the first service to receive the Goose when they took delivery of 26 OA-9s in 1938. The US Navy also received its first Goose in 1938. 205 would be acquired by the Navy as XJ3F-1/JRF-1/JRF-1A, JRF-4, JRF-5 & JRF-6s. The Marines acquired 3 and the Coast Guard 10 which were supplemented during the war with Navy Geese. Like most other NF books, illustrations triumph over text. Within the scope of the book, there is a fair amount of brief descriptions of the history of the aircraft. Pre-war use is fairly good for the amount of text dedicated to the book. This volume is 72 pages. To get a better history of the aircraft you would probably need to spend about 5 times as much and buy the Air Britain book on the Goose. Even then the illustrations aren't as good. ( )
