RECOMMENDED READING BY THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ORTHOTISTS & PROSTHETISTS It was 1969 when author Kevin Garrison was diagnosed with cancer. Not long after that, Garrison's doctor informed him his right foot needed to be amputated. In that moment, Garrison knew his life would be changed forever. In his true story of survival, Garrison shares his incredible journey facing uncertainties and anger, struggling with emotional and physical pain, and fighting fear as he moved further away from his normal routine and into the world of the permanently disabled. As he chronicles the events leading up to his loss, his recuperation, and the adoption of a prosthetic foot, he poignantly details his true feelings, triumphs, setbacks, and positive choices as he learns how to focus on his abilities instead of his disabilities. Through his exploration into his deepest, most personal thoughts, Garrison illustrates a descriptive and sometimes shockingly funny journey as he discovers what it is like to be an amputee and what it really means for his love life and his future career. It's Just a Matter of Balance shares an eye opening glimpse into the inspiring life of Garrison, who demonstrates to others that with genuine acceptance of our fate, we can finally begin to live the life we were meant to have.… (altro)

Early history: I was born in Cleveland Ohio, moving to El Paso, Texas when I was 10 years old. Lived in beautiful El Paso for 15 years. I now reside in South Florida and have been living here since 1980.
I love and enjoy my family very much and truly feel blessed to have them all with me in my life.
I love to go fishing and play golf but don't seem to have the time to do much of either. Watching a science fiction movie is a great love of mine, I find it to be a most interesting diversion from the realities of the day, which as you may agree, can be quite challenging at times.
I also relax by playing my classical guitar as I continue studying the beautiful and complex style of Flamenco music. Wow, what beautiful music it truly is!
I started making artificial limbs in 1973 in El Paso, Texas. I was just 19 years old then and so proud to tell you, actively practicing today. I opening my office in 1986 -
(Garrison's Prosthetic Service, Inc.) in the picturesque city of North Miami Beach, Florida.
Why I wrote the book -
I decided to start writing the book in 2003, as I felt mature enough at 50 years of age to reach my goal: helping people with disabilities through my personal story of success, survival and most important; making my dreams come true.
This was my motivation to write the book:
I wanted to say, "Here son, read this book now, it will help you", as the book was handed to me. You see, I had no access to amputee support groups or psychological care when I became an amputee back then, in 1971.
I just recently replaced the books Prologue with an Epilogue. This gave me an opportunity, providing deeper insight into my story, helping the reader understand more of whats in the pages.
The book is now recommended reading by The American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists I couldn't be more proud of this!
Recently it has been brought to my attention that a Practice Planner called: "The Veterans and Active Duty Military Psychotherapy Treatment Planner", has the book listed as suggested reading. So happy about this!
I have found that when some readers finish the book, they donate it to the local city or college library. So cool!
Much more information about the book can be found at www.GarrisonsProsthetics.com where you can find interesting book testimonials and book reviews.
I hope you choose to read the book.
Respectfully,
Kevin S Garrison, CP,LP/Author ( )
