Neri may be only 24 years old, but she is already close to dying. Her current boyfriend is a drug leader that gets off on pain. When he gets tired of his current flavor, he gets rid of them and finds a new one. Neri’s time is up and her only chance for survival is to escape.

Knuckles is the head bouncer of a popular bar named Sunlight and Slavery. Knuckles is six and a half feet of muscle in the evening and stone during the day. Knuckles is a freed gargoyle that used to guard a church. Now he guards the patrons of the bar and his boss.

Neri is stuck between a rock and a hard place. If she can’t find a way out of the bar she is in, her boyfriend’s body guard will use her as a play toy. She takes her chance but bumps into Knuckles by accident. Knuckles is attracted to her but with his bulky size it makes him feel like an ox in a china shop. He can tell she is afraid for her life at the bar so he keeps his eye on her and the nasty people she is with. When Neri makes a run for it, she is caught but Knuckles comes to her rescue.

What happens next is unusual yet emotional. Knuckles doesn’t feel worthy of her but can she make him realize that his heart isn’t made of stone?

I have just recently discovered how great gargoyles could be and this book makes me glad that I found them. Sunlight and Slavery by Mina Carter was a wonderful story about two people that normally wouldn’t meet. When they do, both are put into a situation that seems so right but also so wrong all at the same time. Knuckles has a fear of hurting her emotionally and physically. Neri at the same is trying to convince him that she is much stronger than he thinks. I enjoyed watching the dance between Knuckles and Neri and I think you will, too.
