Pretty awful viewed as a novel, even though it was intended for children. However it forms a important record of how mining was done at the time which is rare and gives us insights which are not recorded elsewhere. The author researched the work carefully and many of the true stories and history and legends of the region are cobbled together here. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

A tale of love, life, laughter and tragedy, with some smuggling thrown in, set amongst the people living near the tin and copper mines of St. Just, Cornwall, in the mid 19th Century. During the mid 1860's the author, R. M. Ballantyne, spent over three months living amongst the mine-workers of St. Just. He incorporates into his novel many historical facts, producing an exciting and very accurate portrayal of Victorian tin and copper mining and everyday Cornish life. Of great value to anyone interested in the history of Cornwall, of Wisconsin (Cornish miners having been quite important in the formative years of the state), or of mining in general.
