This book is set up that each chapter tells the story of a Chinese Woman that manages to escape from China as soon as they could after Communism took over China. In the telling of each woman's story, Chinese customs and history are revealed. I enjoyed this book. It shows that no matter which country we come from, we still are very much the same. Though not earth-shattering & a little choppy at times, most of these sweetly-written & easy-to-read stories were interesting. (Though there were a couple of duds that I couldn’t appreciate and left me puzzled.) I may be biased as I am familiar with many of the stories’ locations, (likely making them seem a little more ‘real’ to me) and I have an interest in different cultures. The stories all have some connection to the Chinese culture, many on the challenges of life during the cultural revolution or to the immigrant experience. But the author also writes of other heavy issues such as suicide, marital discord and infidelity. Gender and authoritarian roles are questioned. Despite such weighted topics, the tales are told in a pleasantly simple style, in little vignettes of life. Food and the importance of obtaining a higher education seems to come up in every story. The protagonists’ thoughts often go back & forth from happy memories of childhood innocence to the (often harsh) realities of being an adult. A few of the stories featured women who were difficult for me to sympathize with (or relate to) due to their being very needy on men. I suggest leaving some time in between reading the stories, otherwise they may seem to blur together. Thanks to the author for a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. With 15 stories in the collection, the book certainly has highlights. The stories are told from a woman's perspective and to Roy's credit, some of her female protagonists question the traditional roles of marriage and motherhood, others yet still reject them in favour of a career or for a chance to live their lives as they see fit. "Frog Fishing" juxtaposes a pastime as mundane as frog fishing against the backdrop of Mao's death. "Twin Rivers" shows heartbreak at its scariest and the consequences that that come with being unable to move on. "Herbs" centers on a woman's decision not to join her husband once she arrives in the United States: a twist in the ending shows that at least this character is eager to break out of her assigned stereotype. Butterfly Tears is a collection of seventeen pieces of short fiction that depict the experiences of Chinese immigrant women facing the challenges of life in a new country. The stories are set in different parts of China, Canada, and to a lesser extent in the United States and examine Chinese women's cross-cultural experiences in North America as well as women's issues and political discrimination in China. The stories, or parts of stories, set in China give the reader interesting glimpses into events such as the cultural revolution and Mao's death.The immigrant experience, the predominant theme, encompasses a number of aspects ranging from issues such as language and food to education.
