44 months - O was very excited about this book and had to have a look at it in the car on the way home from the library. But then when we read it it was really difficult to get her excited about it. I tried emphasizing sounds and asking her questions and such and she really wasn't overly interested. OK story and illustrations otherwise just didn't turn out to be a big hit. ( )

Summary: This children's book is about a monster who is acting like he is hungry so that has to mean he is going to eat "the reader". Tension builds up by the monster coming for "the reader" and in the end all he wanted were big sloppy kisses. He was not a mean monster after all, he just wanted a kiss before bed.

Argument: I thought this book was a great children's book for a number of reasons. The first being the tone or voice of the story. The tone of the story is one that creates fear for the reader, which would make it a fun book to read to children. The tone sets the scary mood that the monster is coming for them and builds their anxiety just a little to keep them interested. And then the tone completely changes to funny and happy when the monster gives big kisses. For example, the fearful tone is created on page 5 when it says, "I hope not. Because he's coming to find you-right now"! I also liked the number of descriptive words and verbs throughout the book. It really helps paint a picture in the mind of the reader. For example, on page 13 it says, "Do you think he'll decide you'll taste even more delicious squished and then squashed onto hot buttered toast"? The last thing I like about this book is its variety of fonts. On every page the font is different for certain words or actions. Some are big, some are small, but all are creative and unique capturing the reader's attention.
The main message of this book is to not always assume something bad is going to happen or that someone is a bad person. The tone of the story makes the reader think that the monster is going to eat them but in reality he just wants a goodnight kiss. ( )
